Wasn’t this a CS exclusive? I thought about getting one when they came out years ago…still kick myself for that decision. No theme or special purpose today--just a good opportunity on a light duty day for some orange goodness carrying the Al Mar Eagle HD in laminated ZDP189 which I'm still keeping pretty.
To this point I hadn't looked into the "overcoat" of the blade's primary steel and just now did a quick search to identify it as 420J2. A little more searching found it's a high chromium/low carbon budget steel whose primary attributes are extreme corrosion resistance coupled with great toughness and high impact resistance. While ZDP189 is also surprisingly corrosion resistant, it possesses very high hardness, which yields a sharp, durable edge, but is proportionally lacking in toughness. I had thought going in the top layer steel would primarily add corrosion resistance, but, as that seems unneeded in this case, toughness seems to be its primary contribution, though it would seem to help largely with full blade breakage and not at all with chippiness at the edge.

It was one of two exclusives from CS. The other was a very handsome deep, bright blue. The standard Al Mar versions included one in with earth brown scales--in laminated ZDP189 like the CS models--as well as a black model in AUS8. I too passed when they came out, also came to regret that, and spent some time trying to find one at a not totally exorbitant price, narrowly missing a few but finally got lucky thanks to a very kind member here.Wasn’t this a CS exclusive? Yes, it is a combination opener. That's pretty cool, finding your gramp's old knife and being able to bring it back to life. It looks like the WD40 bath did the scales some good too. Is that a combo bottle/can opener on the back end? Did you sharpen that too? Also wondering, did you sand the gloss finish off your Ultralight's scales? I've wondered about doing that for better grip, but I like the appearance as it is too. I've also got the same polished linen Micarta on my Falcon Talon.
Nice looking vacation carry setup. I understand the 3am even on vacation
