Vyborg, Saturday.

For the weekend, my daughter and I went to the city of Vyborg. It is located 80 miles from Petersburg. An hour in a commuter train,

and here we are on the embankment with longships.

This city is called the most European city in Russia. Three stages can be traced in the architectural sights of Vyborg.

The first is the late Middle Ages.
The city was founded by Swedish knights in 1293.

They built a castle and several stone dwellings.

0-IMG-20230722-205649.jpg

This settlement is overgrown with various trade, craft and religious parts. In the 14-16 centuries, many stone houses were erected, town halls and cathedrals appeared. The houses in the photo are 400-500 years old.

There are two sights in the photo.

0-IMG-20230722-114141.jpg

Clock tower and ruins of a 15th century Catholic cathedral. The cathedral was destroyed by Soviet aircraft during World War II.

0-IMG-20230722-205516.jpg

And of course the Vyborg Castle itself.

Now there are restoration work going on, so the photo is only from the outside.

The second stage is Northern Modern.
According to the results of the Northern War in 1710, Vyborg became part of the Russian Empire. It becomes a frontier fortress. And after the last Russian-Swedish war of 1808-1809, Sweden transfers part of its eastern lands to the Russian Empire as a ransom. And Emperor Alexander the First signs a manifesto on the creation of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The future state of Finland. The next emperor, Nicholas the First, in the 1840s, introduces Finnish-language education in schools and colleges on the territory of the future Finland. Finnish is declared the state language along with Russian and Swedish. By the 1860s, Vyborg actually became the industrial capital of the Principality of Finland.

Many large companies move there.

The dawn of the Northern Modern begins in Vyborg.
Here is the entrance to the building of Hackman, a well-known company in the knife community.

0-IMG-20230722-202740.jpg

And here is the building of the Finnish merchant bank.

0-IMG-20230722-113700.jpg

The third stage is Constructivism.
In 1917, the Russian Empire ceases to exist, and a civil war begins in Russia. The British land their troops in the north, in Arkhangelsk. The joint Anglo-French fleet besieges Odessa and Sevastopol, the German Volunteer Army occupies the Baltic states, the Japanese land in Manchuria, and the American troops in the Far East. Everyone wants a little skin from a wounded bear, and they all underestimated the size of this country. And Finland declares itself independent within the boundaries of the very manifesto of Alexander the First. Vyborg becomes a Finnish city. New factories,

power stations

are being built there, trams are appearing, government buildings.

On this, the first day can be considered completed. In the evening, if I have the strength, I will show you the Monrepo State Park.

He actually got to haul it over there last Saturday. It’s crazy but he was driving a Lull at age 4 haha. He’s down for the count right now tho, had tonsils and adenoids taken out this week. He should be back in action to pull the main feeds from the transformer pad
Oh man. I hate he is out for those reasons. That surgery sucks at any age. Hope he is back to full speed soon.

As always your posts are greatly appreciated!!👍👍👍. Enjoy the quality time with your daughter!!!

Happily I managed to snag the color scheme I liked of this recently discontinued, always underrated beauty!

Pintail
Look at that grind and tell me that isn't easily in the top three all-time best knives under a hundred!

No, because:
The blade is less than 3.5 inches.
The flipper makes it difficult to place your hand closer to the blade.
The stop for opening the knife with your thumb takes away the length of the blade.
Protruding metal from under the lining at the end of the handle.
Bearings.

Lay off the rubbing alcohol, chief, you're sauced

I mean, you did ask. It wouldn't make my top one million just based on the blade length alone. Looks like a fantastic deal at the discontinued price and the steel you get but a 3" blade is a hard pass for me.

Demand the top ranking of a knife based on subjective preferences and you are sure to get disagreement on an internet forum full of enthusiast. Doesn't mean the other guy is drinking poison.

Ok, so our granddaughters are in town for the weekend and we went to see a movie. I’m not gonna tell ya’ what we saw, but I put a very subtle hint in the first two pics. I doubt anyone will pick up on it, but you’re certainly welcome to hazard a guess. Like I said….it’s subtle.

Anyway, I went with “William Henry Spearpoint Saturday” as my theme for the day. Should’ve gone with a pink theme like 98% of the people in the theater.

For anyone wondering…assuming somebody picked up the oh-so-clever-but-very-well-hidden clue….the movie was actually waaaay better than I expected. Clever, funny….and at times even thought provoking; the adults in our group all really enjoyed it. Surprisingly, it was well over the heads of our 7 and 9 year old granddaughters. Definitely geared toward teens and young adults…potentially a bit inappropriate/offensive for the starchy crowd.

Personally, I laughed my ass off during a lot of the racier scenes.

Hope everyone is having an awesome weekend. Oh, and credit goes to @birdave for the action figure prop idea. Not trying to encroach on your territory here Dave….this is just a one-and-done for me.
Looks like she has a new love, his name: William Henry
