Then Friday we went on a bigger hike up to Rainier. We had visited this spot just a couple of weeks ago, but we enjoyed it so much we decided to return and explore further. Not sure how far it was or how high in elevation we got because much of the trail is unmarked and no longer maintained, but I know we were up there pretty far. The pics can't even begin to capture the scale of the place.
I could never tire of the prism effect on this waterfall.

The waterfall is where the hike ends for all the sane people, but we're heading above closer to the peak. We stopped to eat at a little meadow which was our stopping point last time, where we were greeted by a herd of mountain goats

Then we decided to head further up, the destination being at the end of the green vegetation in this pic

Behind us the view is absolutely breathtaking, with many of the surrounding peaks in view (Adams and St. Helens visible here, and you can just barely make out Mt. Hood in the center)
![]()
Ok, this is as far as we go. If I'm being honest the footing was starting to get pretty sketchy at this point

Now for the trek back down
![]()
The creek below the original waterfall provided the ideal spot to cool off

Back home got cleaned up, switched to the Manix2 and Vic Compact, had some fajitas for supper, then walked across the street to the park to watch the sun set on the mountain we had spent the day on

Still carrying the Manix this morning for now until I see what the day brings.

Thanks for the tips! That'll give me something to experiment with. I'll give it a try on my most scratched and snailed knife, my 21. My phone really likes to focus on just one small area and blurs the rest when I take macro shots. It used to take really surprisingly good pictures, however it's my work phone and I've carried it in my pocket every day for a couple years without something protecting the glass that covers the camera lens, and it ended up getting some light scratches. I found out that the big river site sells replacement glass for Samsung phones, and even have it here, however I haven't done the procedure yet because you have to break the original glass to get it off and it's a little daunting.Getting snail trails to show in a photo is surprisingly difficult! I did some very unprofessional experimenting a while back and if I remember right, capturing them is almost exactly the opposite of what you would want for any other kind of picture.
Again, from memory. You want a strong light source, right above your knife. Maybe two to three feet high, or sixty to ninety centimeters, for our Science Units friends. It's better if it's a really ugly white light too, so that it gives good contrast. The background should be dull and non-reflective, and it would help if it's similar in color to your knife, because metals like to pick up background colors.
Low angles help with picking up subtle differences in surface finish, so you want to be close to the knife. As in, your camera lens is resting on the surface you're trying to photograph. My camera has a "macro" setting, for very close-up photos, and I almost always use it when trying to get these kinds of pictures.
Well, I almost always used it. I got paywalled by two image hosting sites now, and I've been too lazy to cough up for a membership, here.
If you decide to muck about with this yourself, post up some photos. Phone cameras have some features that may make photographing trails more challenging, so I'd like to see if somebody can make it work.
Wow... Kizer's stepping into the Rex 45 and non-stainless arena huh?? That's badass. I really like Kizers, I've had quite a few and they've all been consistent with their fit & finish that punches way beyond what they should for the price. Good ol' trusty Kizer. I hope they start doing more steels like this! Do you know what hardness they're heat treating it to? I looked on a couple sites and couldn't find it. Please let us know how she does when you've had a chance to give her some use!I'll be carrying this new Kizer Mystic for a while. Curious to test out some Rex 45. Nice thin grind anyway, should perform well.

I had to read that twice.Nice ash!
I just found these specs. I'll know whether it's closer to the upper or lower side of the ht in a few days.Wow... Kizer's stepping into the Rex 45 and non-stainless arena huh?? That's badass. Haha yeah one thing about the thumbstud Kizer knives I have is that they're definitely guillotines. I think we're used to thumbstud knives being on washers and more hydraulic so these bad boys catch us off guard a little bit. That's cool on the Skiffs, I'm curious to see how those work for ya. Thanks for the hardness infoI just found these specs. I'll know whether it's closer to the upper or lower side of the ht in a few days.
My only complaint is how drop shut it is.Definite guillotine. I have some Skiff solid washers I'm going to drop in to see if that will slow it down a bit.

Stupid fobs, I hate those things!Hide your Hardware Sunday
Reate Gent#9
My bad: you can see I scratched the beautiful blade slightly removing a titanium bead from a paracord. Grrrr! I knew those fobs would be the end of me. Any clean up suggestions?
Edit: DocJekl suggested it may not be a scratch but rather material from the bead. Scotch Brite seems to be minimizing it greatly

Many thanks my friend! Yea, I'm so happy I picked that up on a gamble. It had some dust inside and unfortunately the wood cabinet was damaged in transit, but I was able to find a rebuilt one for that model by pure chance and after taking it apart for a good cleaning the thing is in really nice shape. Love that vintage charm and I've always been a big Sony fanatic as well. We're one of those families that always has the house full of music so we've put it to good use, and man does it put off a rich sound.Great pics, as usual, and very cool old school Sony receiver![]()
How do we become good friends? I need to be on some of these hikes with you and your son. Lol. It’s definitely worth the $ for a visit!
Amazing shots and I’m definitely jealous…not a little bit, but a whole lot!!
Doing a little hiking myself today…may not be as stunning as yours.
