Those are the cut off ends of boiler fire tubes. You have to cut one end off to get them out of the vessel when they develop leaks and need replaced.

Lord do I wish I could get new boilers. Mine were installed in 1959!

That age probably means coal fires unless converted to gas or fuel oil. At least you are able to maintain them
