A little Brisa Scara 60 in “buffalo” micarta for a Fixed-blade Friday.

Gotta say, I’m finding this to be a pretty cool pocketable fixed blade for the money. Didn’t know what to expect as I wasn’t familiar with the brand, but I was pleasantly surprised upon receiving it.

Have a great weekend!

I'm carrying a PM-2 in S90V. I didn't think anything could replace my Cru-carta, but this may be the knife that can. I've carried it for several months and haven't had to sharpen it yet (mind you, at this point in my life I'm not as obsessed with a "perfect edge"). Either would suit me, but I like the canvas micarta handles much better. They'll get ugly quick, but I don't care, I like the feel of them although I didn't at first.

Whatever knife I carry from this point further (I'm in my 70's and in poor health), I can't see straying from Spyderco except for some very specific knife. I wish I'd found the brand much, much earlier, as they offer pretty much everything I find useful n a blade - except for skinning, and I haven't tried them on that and likely won't.

Back when I was a fur trapper, I was also a mail-order retailer; I bought some brand of knife that had white plastic handles and a hard SS blade which was a 1-2 triangle, roughly. They came in straight and serrated blades. I used the straight edged knives for most skinning, but used the serrated blades for the necessary "wringing" near the paws or other bones as those bones would dull a straight blade. I don't remember who made them, but I'd keep a half-dozen of each sharpened and ready to go. When you're working a full-time job and trapping several lines, anything that speeds you up is much appreciated. On weekends I sharpened my knives, as that's the time that trap and fur thieves worked. I did keep some curved skinners for beavers, and to be completely honest I never figured out an easy way to skin them - I mostly trapped them for fun, and to get access as they caused the warden an undue amount of problems keeping drain pipes etc. clear. I pretty much had carte blanche at that wilderness area as long as I stayed in touch with the warden, those beaver made his job miserable and he wasn't allowed to trap them except for live traps, which don't work well in the beavers' habitat. Also, he could trap and relocate them and they'd be back within the week.

A knife I didn't have then but wish I had is the "Queen Steel" skinner. Queen, after years of less that mediocrity, started producing great knives, and their very hard "big-bellied" skinner was perfect. Damn, I wish I'd had one when I was skinning beaver in my cold trapping shed, that's a fine knife - at least mine is.
