So...continuing on with my daily carry of "lesser" or more dated blade steels finds me pocketing my vintage Al Mar Eagle Ultralight. This is definitely a Fadden era piece, so likely made by Moki, and I was pretty sure it's AUS8, as most from that era were, but it also presents some of that typical molten luster of Japanese VG-10 at a more or less right angle to the faint grind lines. Over the years there have been so many different Al Mar tang stamps that my casual research has so far failed to date its "PRODUCT OF JAPAN" stamp as an identifier of a VG-10 blade that would have been featured in the Ultralight models' later years.
Now, this isn't one of those high end knives with a more basic steel, but the quality of Seki City knives' F&F is on a par with that of some mid-techs that cost substantially more and these older Al Mars are a great value if you can find one that's not outrageously overpriced due to the increasing rarity of specimens in good condition. I'm glad to have my several with their more basic steels and am just as happy to cut stuff with them as with those I have costing many times much more.
