Best of 2024? Yeah, I probably should have planned this out for the week. The truth is, I haven't bought very many new production knives this year. Some of my purchases were either older models or were actually released near the end of 2023. Still, I'll post my top picks tomorrow. Today, I'm carrying what I'd consider the runner ups.
For folders, the Kizer Helmet is both cool and representative of a new trend I really like from Kizer: thinner blades in a tough stainless. It's also a budget knife running on multi-row bearings, another great trend from Kizer that hasn't gotten as much notice as I would have expected. The main thing holding it back from a top spot is something that bothered me about a bunch of otherwise budget wins from Kizer: blocky scales and/or crisp scale edges. It just wasn't comfortable enough in hand from the box. So I rounded the scale edges. Now it is supremely comfortable in hand but that doesn't count.
The same is true of the Vosteed Mink, which otherwise, would probably have been my production fixed blade of the year. It's awesome so don't get me wrong. This one is in the stock configuration. The frag pattern is wonderfully grippy but just a little bit uncomfortable around the edges, so I rounded those edges on other ones and I really notice the difference. Beyond that, they missed a bit with the sharpening choil and the blade smiles up a little as a result. I'm honestly surprised that in 2024, companies are still failing to clear the plunge with their sharpening choils.
Sure, none of those issues are deal-breakers, lots of people straight-up don't care about them, and they are obviously fixable. It just stops these knives from making the top spots.
That said, these cigars are
definitely top picks for new releases in 2024. Hoyo dropped both the Oscuro and the Rojo as budget-friendly choices this year and both really deliver at their price level. Both are box-worthy and cover different ends of the aroma spectrum.
