I couldn't agree with you more about having to sleep with one eye open.. I'm married to a filipina, but she hasn't trained although she does not show it when she is slicing up fish or something else like that.. During my travels to the Philippines, I have been able to train and meet several instructors from the various islands and regions of the country.. My instructor in one of the systems that I trained in was a guerrilla during ww2 and later went on to become one of the Filipino scouts that was assigned to the US military during the occupation of Japan after ww2.. I started training with him after moving out of Taiwan where I studied Kuntao for the first time ( early 70s) and moved to the Philippines during the time after we started the close down of the bases involved with the vietnam era in the early 70s.. I started training and researching silat about 15 years ago while living in the states while working for the navy at Great Lakes.. I would make the drive to Michigan where one of my instructors lived and when I continued with my Kuntao studies, I had an instructor who was a member of the LRRPs during Vietnam.. Most of my instructors have passed on now, so I am relegated to training within the systems I have been able to get..
