EDC - your Thoughts?

Depending on your preferences of blade style, weight, locking mechanism, and manufacturer, I can recommend both the Spyderco Chinook II (6 oz, s30v steel, upswept point) and the Benchmade 710 (4.5 oz, gently recurved blade, available in 154cm or M2 steel).

For in pocket carry - I find that 3 5/8" length, and about 3 layers/backsprings
just about the maximum - for me.
<snip>
As anecdotal evidence the very popular SAKs are in the 3 1/4 to 3 1/2" lengths, and most people don't regularly carry in-pocket much more than about 2 or 3 layered models.

The popular Case 6318 Stockman pattern is 3 5/8" and two backsprings thick.....

Still on the thought of in-pocket carry -

On first sight the Case looks like it should be much better carry, as it appears to be slimmer - but the view of the knives closed gives the better comparison:

the sheepsfoot blade sits quite a bit proud of the handle making it almost the same height as the SAK - the Case is still slimmer - but not as much as when just looking at the handle.

My EDC is a Victorinox climber. Three backsprings is my maximum. I also like the compact, scientist and tinker. I find the scissors almost as useful as the knife. I prefer the 3 1/4 to 3 1/2" length.

I carry a Vnox Classic on my keys, and a Vnox Recruit, because I regularly use each and every tool on both of them (except the toothpicks).
For EDC away from work, I'm using a Spyderco Paramilitary, and at work a BM710HS.
Why? Because they work for their assigned jobs better than anything else I've tried. Sadly, I don't currently carry any of my favorite knives since I'm going through a practical phase.
I actually decided to put all my knives in a box, and aside from the EDC stuff, will only take another knife out when I actually NEED it for something.
3 weeks and counting--so far an Opinel OP-8 is the only thing that's escaped the box (except for a AGR Deerhunter that a friend wanted to try out before buying one). Figures...
Maybe I'll get rid of whatever's left in the box at the end of the year

phwl I only just noticed your location of Hong Kong.

If you look at the Victorinox Economy leaflet in my opening post - it has a dealer's address label - "Shunts".

This used to be one of my "must visits" in Ocean Terminal (Kowloon) - there's where I frist saw and bought my Scientists.

However, on my last visit (some years ago) I think they may have changed their name (ownership?) to Victorinox ......

My EDC is my new Benchmade 556 yellow Mini-Griptilian.

How I chose this knife--I needed a folder that met several requirements:

Not too heavy.
It should be comfortable even when wearing light shorts without a belt in the summer.
That means it also needs to have a pocket-clip.

It needs to have a strong, reliable lock that is easy to operate with one hand.

It needs to be a one-hand folder.
I think the one-hand folder (tactical if you like) is just easier to access than a traditional folder.
I don't really care if it has studs, a disk, or a thumbhole--just as long as they work.

The bladesteel should be strong and hold an edge for a reasonable amount of useage, and it should be easy to sharpen too.
Also, the bladesteel should be fairly "maintenance free" because I'm lazy.

The knife and blade design should be good for everyday utility but could be pressed in to self-defense service if need be.

It needs to be a "friendly knife" that does'nt raise any eyebrows from the average guy.
And it should'nt look too evil if it was presented to a jury in court as evidence.

I think the 556 does all of that.

Happy hunting,
Allen.

I would be interested in knowing how many BF members carry the "popular" Case stockman...or any Case as their EDC.

I started off carrying a Victorinox in school - didn't everyone? It was the craftsman carried either in a belt pouch, in my pocket, or on a ring & lanyard clipped to my belt loop . Gave up on the SAK because most of the tools didn't seem like they'd stand up to much abuse so why have them? Also the blade closed on me a couple of times. Switched to a Buck Folding Hunter on my belt - liked the looks and the lock. Switched to the Buck Duke cause I could carry it in my pocket and it was rather thin. Didn't like the fact that I had to hunt for it in my pocket and that on occassion it would snag on other things in my pocket. Saw the Spydie worker in flat black. That became my edc - the clip and the hole - one handed opening. That got retired when I saw the police (the bigger the better). A fully serrated police spydie has been my edc for I dunno how long. At one time I carried that, a Military, and an Emerson CQ7. ( Coudn't make up my mind). Now I carry a large classic sebbie plain edge for most cutting chores, the police for packing straps, boxes etc., a MOD CQD Mark I for urban survival (never know when you'll need to cut a seat belt or break a car window), and a superknife for the sheeple. Really I carry all these daily. Oh forgot I also carried a Supertool - now that could put up with some abuse. Switched to a Wave because you can access the knives without having to open the tool. Right now I'm very happy with these edc and feel prepared for most occassions. Although if Hawaii ever issues carry permits I'd be even happier. and better prepared. Its the Boy Scout training. At home my military, microtech lcc and Emerson CQ7 are all at hand near my computer

I generally like something 3 1/2" - 3 3/4" closed. This size range rides well in the pocket and in the hand for me. I like blades from 2 1/2" - 2 3/4". This handles all my EDC needs and more.

My current rotation:
V-nox settler (all the time)
CRK Mnandi (my favorite single bladed knife)
CRK Umfaan
CRK small regular and classic Sebenzas (my BIG knives)
Lone Wolf Loveless Cuty Knife
Case Mini Copperlock...not the greatest, but I love the design
...next up are a WH T-10 lancet and another Mnandi. :D

I've wondered about this too.

Case have numerous past and current versions of the 6318 pattern Stockman.

There's even a Case Collector's Club (established over 20 years) claiming over 13,000 members
http://www.wrcase.com/ccc/hist.htm

Case is one of the more obvious names associated with traditional American pattern "pocket" knives - like Stockman and Trappers.

W.R. Case has a long history/heritage of American knifemaking:

http://www.wrcase.com/history/TIMELINETEST.htm

BUT perhaps Case pocket knives are just collected, and not carried and used?
- but perhaps they were more likely to be EDCs only in years gone by?

Anyone?

My EDC is really uninspiring. I have been switching between a Spyderco Mouse and a Benchmade 705 Forum Knife. I also carry a Prybaby on a lanyard with a Maglite solitare on the other end. Why do I keep switching between the Spyderco and the Benchmade? I don't really know. I love the way the Mouse fits into my hand, but the Benchmade has CF scales, M2 blade steel and BC1 coating. It is just a neat looking knife that cuts like crazy.

Unknown - I don't recall Shunts but there are two Victorinox shops in Ocean Center which is probably related to its namesake. They carry all of the standard models there, including the new ones with the USB memory etc. There are also dingy camping stores, especially in Mong Kok with interesting models, probably old stock. That's where I found my scientist.

The Victorinox shops are great, they do engraving for US$1.25 on knives purchased in the shop.

Let me know if you plan to come to HK for another holiday.

Shunts were around 'til at least 1989.

When I visited HK 1997 - I could not find Shunts, but there was a Victorinox store in another space in the Ocean Centre - so I just assumed it was the same store with a name/ownership change.

Next time you're there, can you please ask if either of the Victorinox shops know about Shunts, and if they had any (former) links/ties to it?

Thanks,

I'll try but I'll most likely just get a blank look! Victorinox is a chain with about half a dozen shops in HK.

I didn't think that at all - in fact the following is pretty
thoughtful and thought provoking

Not everything in life needs to be rationalized, sometimes one's instinct leads to certain paths unexplained.

I think we may have had a conversation over on KnifeForums about flashlights - I think we're now just on the verge where single AAA (and AA) battery LED lights are starting to be realistically priced - the Dorcy 1AAA (1LED) flashlight available at local Wal-Marts for $5.94 may be worth looking at for long and bright runtimes - here's that link to the thread -

I have to admit that I don't actually have an EDC because none of my knives are actually carried every day. There are a small group that see some pocket time, the one getting the most pocket time is usually the newest acquisition. Of all my folders I have to say that one that I still think is the best EDC is the A.G. Russell Featherlight One-Handed folder. I believe it is AUS-8 and cost less than $30 but it is thin, light, great general use blade shape, opens and closes with one hand and doesn't have a clip. The last item I am getting away from. I now only want clips on the longest folders that I carry as most of the time I would rather use pocket carry.

For me lately...

Spydie Delica Lightweight

AND

SAK (Lock Back)

AND

Cold Steel Ready Edge

AND

Leatherman Micro

AND

Mouse Light...

R/DANGELO

God bless the men and women of our Armed Forces...

Yep, that's about the size of it .... (sorry, for the deliberate pun :D )

My max for in-pocket carry is probably under 3 3/4" with somewhere about 3.5" (91mm) being the optimum (standard Vic SAK length).

Anything about 4" or longer - I'd much rather have clipped to my pocket -even with a clip about 4 5/8" is likely to be max -

5" is definitely too long - fits clipped to pocket (and OK for temporary short carry) but not comfortable for a real EDC - so anything longer than 4 3/4" closed probably would be carried in a belt-sheath.
