Rangler. I am glad to hear from you. I got the system about twenty years ago. A guy at a sport show was selling them. He sharpened my old Case knife in about two minutes and I bought a set then and there. Since then I have shown or told a few hundred other people about them and many have them in their arsenal. To a man, anyone who has given them a real test has been amazed at the job they do for the input it takes. Not even one knife in a hundred will not respond well to their use.
Rob B and I were talking the other night about them again and one point that could be improved is deepening the V on the newer Green one where the fine hone is inside the other hone. Larger chefs type knives do not, or just barely fit inside the sharpener. Would hogging it out a little deeper effect the strength?
It is to easy for some and makes them feel guilty. However like Rob said and I can second, when your up to your elbows cutting meat or veggies and you need to keep your sharp knives sharp, there just is no quicker easier or better way to do the job than these simple effective tools.
Last but not least, NOTHING sharpens fillet knives like the edge maker pro. This alone would keep me a customer for life. It's to bad that FILLET knives do not fit Rob Babcocks hand. His knife skills deteriorate as he gets close to a fish cleaning table.[/QUOTE

udtjim ( appreciate your service to our country Jim)
Thanks for the kind words - we have worked long and hard to bring the
edgemaker system to it's state of the art, that it is now..
Regarding the Green 3-n-1 #2000-
A. If you have a band saw- you can take the blade out..and re-install
the blade INSIDE the opening and cut a nice clean edge back
into the stock of the opening..right at the notch..that is used for
aiming the blade at the center point..cut just enough for your
largest blade..but in no case more than an inch and a half or so
...if your band saw blade is not wide enough -Caution Please!
you might want to make two passes..I have done this with mine
just to experiment and it works fine, without changing the dynamics
of the flex enough to notice so far. OR...
B. I can send you a couple of the Ultra Fine rods and you can take
the old ones out..you will now be going from the Medium to the
Ultra Fine grit..but if you vary the pressure from heavy to light on
the Medium grit then do the same on the Ultra Fine you will be OK
- with skipping Fine grit. OR....
C. If you 'break in' the Fine grit with a drawer full of knives..you
will notice a 'sweet spot' or wear point on the fine rods..once you
get to this point..it hones almost as good as the Ultra Fine, just press
firm for a dozen strokes - then slowly back off on the pressure
until you are not flexing the rods at all...stick with it..try to give it
at least a dozen light strokes...Once you get to this point (of
sharpening) it's more the technique than the grits..especially between
Fine (broke in) and the Ultra Fine.!
This last part is also the technique
for getting extra razor sharp edges..to take it from serviceable to
scary is to vary the pressure on the knife.so you see the steels
flex..you hear the noise and feel the drag on your hand.
heavy pressure at first - then slowly back off or feather back on the
pressure until
you are NOT flexing the steels at all..and stick with this part
for a couple of dozen strokes if you want RAZOR sharp edges.
At the shows I take every knife handed to me and in just a few
minutes, as you saw Jim, and put a edge so sharp that I not only
push cut the paper, but I lay the paper down and FILLET the paper
I have done this to over a 1/4 of million knives in 21 years! And
still counting..
I am working the Spokane Inland Wildlife Sportsman Show this
week 3/20/08 to 3/22/08..all you knife geeks in the WA come
on by for sweetheart deals at the show!![]()
OH THANKS to Shooter and Lanza for the orders..especially to Rob &
UDTJim for being great long time customers..really appreciate it..!
Hope this helps a little..next time I will give some ideas on
achieving razor sharp with the Ultra Fine..on SERRATED edges!

My all time favorite carry knife is Spyderco Police Model
- all serrated, when I work some gun shows, I pack a Left
AND a Right hand model..one in each front pocket! -
and with the razor sharps edges from the Ultra Fine..
I am truly Armed & Dangerous!

The Edgemaker Pro does indeed do a fine job on serrated knives...
Rob--- That's ugly but impressive.I assume you used a slow and deliberate pull thru the Edgemaker? Did you also push it thru? Have you tried the Spyderco Sharpmaker for serrated knives? If so, how do the results compare. The Edgemaker certainly looks to be simplier.
I am Grateful to the old guy from Desmet SD who sold me on these great tools.
Has anyone heard back from Rangler? I emailed him, and didn't get a response![]()
I've looked at the website and am confused about which item or items one would order to get the full benefit with all the options. Please advise.
I assume this wouldn't be ideal for Scandi Grinds such as my Moras?
Very nice looking product though, Maybe I'll get a system for my knives with more conventional edges.
