Would this system work with a tanto blade? Or would you wind up rounding it off?
One would have to be especially careful with a system like this for any blade corner, be it Americanized tanto or just a pointy tip. You only want the rods moving perpendicular to the edge, so that it will only remove metal perpendicular to the edge, which is normally assured in the process. However, there are an infinite number of perpendiculars to a point, and there are only one (in the case of a tip) or two (in the case of an A. tanto) that you want to remove metal in.

Based on my experience with the Sharpmaker, you'd have to ease up/off when approaching the corner/tip so as to prevent it from rounding off.

Yeah, pretty much. I haven’t tried to sharpen a tanto yet, but as long as you go slow and be careful to hold perpendicular to the rod you shouldn’t have a problem. Take your time! It might be worth practicing on a cheap blade first just to get a feel for it.

I am new here but after reading this thread plus others I ordered from Rangler. Great deal for forum members- fast service and already shipping !! Sure can't ask for more. I will also report back after I test this. From what many have told me I can well imagine it will be a great repo:thumbup:rt. Thanks to all !

Thanks to everyone for the great posts in this thread. I've been in touch with Rangler and he's been fantastic in both responsiveness and advice - he even replies on Saturdays when I was expecting him to be resting! He was most helpful in helping me get the most bang for my buck - as I live in France, the shipping charges are almost equal to the price of a 4-step set. Like ordawg1, I will be back with a more detailed review once I get the Edgemakers.
