Edgepro...you must be joking

Quality products normally cost more. This is an excellent product and Ben is a helluva guy. Money well spent.

Well King Grinch, I can appreciate that Edge Pro products look expensive. If you buy the Razor's Edge plus Eze-lap and practice with it, you will no doubt achieve your own level of sharpness with it at a price you are more willing to pay. As with many things in life, to get good you invest time or money. Either way, you have to make the investment.

Since my time is limited, I find my Edge Pro a very good investment, even at the price. It offers razor sharp edges and easy consistent reprofiling in reasonable time. Once a blade is brought to that level, it takes very little to restore the edge. Over the last thirty or so years in the field I have used pretty much every type of sharpener. I prefer the Edge Pro over the others due to its ease of use and the very good results I get.

When the price of an item looks high, I try to remember that the most expensive money I ever spent was the money I saved buying a cheap item over & over & over ....

These days I buy quality. Yes, it costs more. But I only have to buy it once. I not only save money in the long run, but enjoy the performance given by a high quality efficient item, rather than fighting with it to compensate for inherent design & material deficiencies of an item made only to be sold cheaply. To steal someone else's tagline, "Buy quality and only cry once."

The choice is yours.

I'm really confused now. Why move this thread to GBU??

All in all, it's a relatively civil discussion of a few decent sharpening systems. Anyone else have trouble understanding why this thread was moved? :barf:

Ralph...my guess would be that some people think that
the sharpening system is either

Good
Bad
or Ugly?

Just a guess....;)

I don't have to wne or use something to comment on it. Hey Roadrunner I have said good things about many products on this board. Maybe you have not seen the posts. The Edgepro to me is a glorified overpriced LANSKY system. Get stones or a grinder if you want to do it the professional way.

King Grinch,

I had a lansky, but now I have a EdgePro Professional. They are not alike at all. If you know anyone that has one, or both---please try it and judge for yourself.

Actually, it's sneaky advertising. A post complaining about prices inspires a series of replies about how good a system is that I hadn't ever heard of.

Chalk up another sale for Edgepro.

Thanks

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you.

Ok I'm mostly a lurker but this one has drawn me out. Being a self described "gadget" freak as well as knife maker and engineer, I've owned just about every sharpening system on the market at one time or another. They all have strong points and weak points (some more so than others). The Lansky is fine for small, thin blades. The Razor Edge has never really impressed me for any blade but if you like it...great. The Spyderco Sharp Maker has it's place too.

However, to compare the Edge Pro Professional to the Lansky/Gatco/DMT Aligner, etc., is like comparing apples and oranges (more like apples and prime rib). To start with, if you're doing blades over 6 inches or so, the Lansky type systems will drive you nuts trying to repeat the angles from one sharpening to the next...and if you're trying to work with a full flat ground blade over 3/16" thick the Lansky type unit just plain stinks! (yes, I know they give you a longer screw for thicker blades but it still doesn't work reliably). Further, if you're sharpening a chisel ground edge with the Lansky type you may find that you can't get enough adjustment to match the orginal angle (not even close in some cases). On top of that, you can just about forget sharpening wood working chisels, shears, scissors, planer blades, etc. on the Lansky type systems...it just won't work. All of these problems, however, are easily handled with the Edge Pro Professional. Is it portable? Not really. Is it complicated? Sort of. Is it cheap? NO! All in all is it the single best sharpening system money can buy from a pure performance standpoint? Without a doubt!!!

I don't want to throw off on the other systems too much though...I still use an old Lanksy "C" clamp to hang grinding belts on in the shop...works pretty good for that. :D

I moved the post here because it was an criticism of a product. It was a statement, not an invitation to debate. Somebody was calling the EdgePro system -bad- because of it's price.
