Educate me on Opinel..

I have an 8 and a 6. The 8's lost somewhere in my garage, but the 6 still gets plenty of pocket time. Good knife- I rarely even bother with the lock, as friction is enough.

The #6 bulky, dipbait? What do you carry that makes that look bulky?

These are pretty popular around here.. Looking into getting one myself.

1. Carbon steel or Stainless?

2. Which model do yall think is the best or most popular?

3. Why are they so popular?

Thanks for the info.

1= carbon steel
2= Opinel #10
3= simplicity, real full flat grind, ergonomics are good for extended use, it is almost like having a Mora that you can put in your pocket, and much more!

I like the #10 for hiking and camping. I guess other models would be better for urban EDC, but I tend to use mine most often when I am outdoors -hence the #10.

In addition to the above recommendations, I love my Opinel #12 for outdoor cooking (holidays, bbq,...). It's too big for edc though.

It looks as though I have a minority view here but I have never been able to notice any difference between the carbon and stainless Opinels in terms of ease of sharpening or edge holding.

Sucks that only models in Finland currently that has carbon steel are no 3 and no 12, the 6 and 8 are stainless. Stainless aren't bad... Somehow I still would like to have Carbon Steel Opinel 7 or 8...

I think we should some day order from some european shop and share shipping charges.
I've been eyeing on opinels lately.. there was this webpage that had lots of opinels on sale but when I checked today it was down. Damnation!

Time for a vacation in France!
Buy your knives, and the food's not bad, either. :D

Opinels are a great design. My only complaint is the steel is too soft. If you could get one with 1095 or M2 at about 65 HRC, oh man, what a knife that would be!

A timely thread. I've been seriously thinking of getting myself a small set of them. A #10, #6 and one of those teensy little keyring jobs (#2 I think).

About time I had an Opinel.

Oh, oh, Opinel!
Collect the set. :)

Hey I am about to Order next month 2x Opinel 7's Carbon's from German eBay. Postal feed's are 1,5 €'s and Opinel 7 Carbbon was 7,5€ so with Postal feeds its about 9€'s for Opinel #7, For Opinel #6 its 8,5 and so forth. Opinel's price increases 25 to 50 snt for larger models. I'll send you ebay link if you care to join.

Is that francais or Suomi :confused: :p

That's negative for both. That, I believe is slang lingo from British comedy show Ali G... Closest thing you hear in Hollywood movies or productions of Finnish is elvish from LoTR's which are based 1/3 Finnish, 1/3 Cymri and 1/3 Tolkien's own words.

Hey I am about to Order next month

I made international order week back, I have to see if I have to pay taxes for it.. If yes, then I may hold back.. but then again opinels aren't really that costy. Anyway, send me a message when you are about to order.

Sorry for the personal messages. :o

I like a slimmer knife when wearing jeans.

Opinels look really good with notched lines cut into the handles, then flame burnished and sealed with tung oil. Seen a few here with modded handles
