Educate Me

Here's what it boils down to for me. First and foremost I live in Germany right now for work and given their laws here last thing I need is problems with the Polizei. However, a good 75% of the tasks I use a knife for at work or at home a 2.5-3 inch blade works just fine anyway. The next reason is that sometimes it is just inappropriate to Rambo out a giant fixed blade or folder around coworkers. This doesn't mean I don't still enjoy them as I have many.

Somewhere I have copies of prints made at least 500 years ago ! Basically it was small job -small knife , large job-large knife . That should be easy to understand !!

I carry a ZT 0561 in my speedo, just for, uh, first impressions and all.

Same situation here, but for me it is an opinel no.2.

I all seriousness, I carry a dpx heat, sak cadet or a JK Knives USK. Smaller knives are more socially acceptable in my work environment.

How old are you?
When I was young, I carried a Walther P-38 all the time. As I got older, I switched to a PPK.
And now, it's the same with a knife. Give this 'ole man light weight.

Except in alcohol. Am I right?

Requardless of restrictions, what's the largest lenght/weight knife that you find comfortable wearing/handling?

I don't see anymore love for small folders than I do for big folders.

What I don't understand is "overbuilt" 1/4" stock folders with 3" blades tucked into 6" handles.

At the moment, my largest folder is an Olamic Wayfarer. It's a 4" blade and its heavy. Not sure on the weight since they're all unique, but it's hefty.

I also have the ZT 0454 and 0452 which are pretty large, but they're extremely light weight though.

Clipped to my pocket? ZT 0561. Clipped to my belt? SOG Seal Pup or Spyderco Schempp Rock.

I like small, light, and thin folders because they are unobtrusive and comfortable to carry, more discreet and non-threatening to use around people, more nimble in-hand, and tend to slice better than thick stock blades.

Even though my small folders handle most of my daily cutting chores, I still also carry a modern one-hander every day. Since most of my one-handers weigh 2-6oz on average, a better question for me might be "why do you still carry larger folders if you don't use them much?" Simple answer is "because I'm a knife-nut and I like 'em!" :D

Handle ergos, not blade size is my limiting factor, I have extremely small hands and fairly slim fingers. I can easily get 4 fingers with a bit of room to spare on my BM 707, and a nearly 4 finger grip on my DF2, without using the forward choil. Most 4" folders have so much handle that the are unwieldy for me to manipulate and use. As a result most of my collection is in the 2.5"-3.5" range, with only a SG Bad Monkey, and my ZT 454 as exceptions. Weight is a much lesser concern for me tho, even tho I don't wear jeans or cargo pants, just slacks and suit pants.

For me it's about the blade not the weight.
It depends on your needs and preferences. If you carry more than one, then time will tell, wich one you use more.
That's how I found I prefer the smaller blades - but then (when it's possible) I add a large.
What I found is that my need change with the seasons. While I don't mind a large blade during wintertime, I go lighter during summer.
I guess that goes along with clothing.

Some of us <cough> "older" guys grew up carring smaller knives because, for the most part, that was what was available. You use what you are comfortable with. While I own quite a few 3.5" - 4" folders I usually carry something smaller. If I want larger, I'll carry a fixed blade instead of a folder. My preference in a folder is around 3" - give or take - depending on design. Proper design of blade size to handle size will allow me to carry a slightly larger knife. My favorite carry knives are:

  1. Spyderco Yojimbo 2
  2. Manix 2 LW S110V
  3. ZT0770CF
  4. BM940-1

The commonality of these favorites of mine are the size and the LW handles and I am not a small guy. As others have said, no wrong or right, it is just a matter of personal taste. :)

I don't know why, but I'm very sensitive to the weight of things in my pockets, so usually prefer smaller lightweight knives. I think a 3" blade is often the perfect size: Strider PT CC, Kingdom Armory Mini Samaritan, Small Sebenza, Hinderer XM-18 3", William Henry E10, Spyderco Rookie, Brous Bionic 2.0 -- all perfect EDC knives in the 3" range.

That's not to say I don't occasionally carrying an Al Mar Eagle, or a Spyderco Endura or a Kizer Flashbang.

That depends, if I am camping, I would carry my bk4 with no hesitation. That being said, I wouldn't carry a bm710 into an office type setting.

A blanket statement such as, what is the largest feel comfortable carrying, can Only be answered by taking your location and situation into account.

Even if you Love to carry a large blade, would you not feel uncomfortable pulling out a 9" fixed blade, like a Becker BK9, in an auditorium full of families and children? In a situation like that a SAK or similar sized knofe would go nearly undetected, as opposed to the former knife.

I can carry a BM810, Becker bk4, DPx Heat or SAK cadet with near equal comfort, situation dependant of course. ;)
