EELLMMAAXX or Seeing Double

I would assume that all of the engraving is done at once, so for a blade to get the "xxxx" engraving, I would assume it would get rejected prior to engraving. Once it's engraved, it probably doesn't get checked again.

Hmmm... Yeah, it doesn't make any difference to me, I just want the knife for utility. I guess I should see if someone wants it as a collector's item.

Should I just list it in the sales forums?

You have to be a gold-level member to sell here - I would just keep it and use it, and enjoy it.

I say wait for awhile until their out of production and find out how many misprints have slipped out of the factory to get an idea on how rare your example is. The thing is with collectable knives, its value depends on the buyer, how much they are willing to pay. Collectors normally dont consider production knives collectable until they have been out of production for many years. If it was me id keep it, and use it as a bartering tool a decade from now.

That's a blemish and I don't see why it would be any more collectible than a pristine example with no errors - in fact I think it would be less desirable in the long term. I say hard use it. It would be foolish to consider it a collector's item.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The reason it would be more collectible, is because it isn't an official blem, but something that made it out of the factory without the XXXX stamp. That is rare. Rare pieces find great homes in collections.

Yeah, okay. How about some Microtechs that made it out of the factory with mismatched screws that don't have an XXXX stamp. How about Benchmades that make it out of the factory with different grind heights that don't have an XXXX stamp. How about Emersons that make it out of the factory with lopsided logos that don't have an XXXX stamp.

Rare =/= desirable.

Rare because it has an obvious flaw or defect that didn't get caught by quality control =/= desirable.

Again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder brother. Desire is an individual feeling, that is how you feel about it. Others may, and most likely will, feel somewhat differently about it. otherwise two others and myself wouldn't have suggested trying to make a few bucks on it! No beef brotha I just don't want you to discourage the option.

If he doesn't care about it there's no harm in trying to make some money off of someone else's mistake, a mistake someone might find desirable.

Just because you fail to see it that way doesnt mean we all do. Get over yourself.

You make it seem like most people see it as desirable and beautiful, and that because I don't see that, I have failed in my reasoning or judgment. I personally can't think of anyone who would pay extra for a production knife with a flaw like that one.

I'll make sure to not say what I think next time, in case someone like you takes offence for no reason.

Thanks i appreciate it.

Seriously though, I see both sides and dont really land on either side of the fence.
I didnt say most, I just said "because you fail to see that way". Im not lumping anyone, anywhere.
Instead of vehemently going in one direction look at both, have a little empathy both ways and amicably post If you feel the urge. My previous post applies.

Anyone else seeing double?

I'm not returning the knife, I'm definitely keeping it - I love the thing and I plan on using the heck out of it.

I just wondered, is this double print common?

I hope Kai patented their new steel Elmax+1.

Did you know the word bookkeeper is the only word in the dictionary that has three letters that repeat?

Did you Photo Shop that picture for an April's fool joke?

Rare =/= desirable.

That may be true for you, but not for others. When certain American currency was printed incorrectly, it was immediately considered rare and, to some, valuable. Like others have said, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. I don't know why it seems as though you're trying to disprove someones opinion.

I'm not unaware of the craze to obtain coins & paper money with mint errors. I have the same opinion of currency with errors as I do of knives with errors. I'm also not sure how bringing that up has anything to do with the unsightly blemish on the OPs knife.

If you feel the need to go there, there's a difference between a bill with a slightly lopsided serial number and a bill where George Washington is completely upside down. There's also a difference between an ugly double print and a knife where, say, someone forgot to laser the blade entirely.

I'm not trying to "disprove" anyone's opinion, whatever that means. Just because something has a rare error, does not necessarily mean that it is desirable. It would be foolish to encourage someone to believe that.

It is an ultra rare prototype of the new elmax temper2 asym double forged hard use blade. How the heck did you get your hand on it!!??!

It's still (Well, was...) top secret basically. They labled it like that so they could test it without direct identificatin but still know which blade is which.

Great find man.

No Photoshop. I hate Photoshop. It's definitely for reals, yo.

And may I say, just to pipe in on the thread's current trajectory:

  1. Personally, I think the "blemish" looks cool. I have an Art degree so you are required to accept my opinion as fact. So, so much for it being unsightly. Seriously, I *am* entitled to that opinion, I hope.
  2. @asdf12345: I do agree that just because it is a misprint, it is not intrinsically more valuable/collectable. BUT I do like this one personally, and for that reason alone, I suspect others may share that opinion.
  3. I only wish that it had a third ELMAX overlayed on top of the two existing ones. Surely we can all agree that a triple-XXX blade is a good one? :D
