Eh, screw it, I'll ask ya'll.......

BK9 and for the record it is not cold in TENN.:D

Not yet. Might not be a very harsh winter here, but since I don't have my wood burning stove anymore, I'm betting it will be lots of cold, wet snow in East Tenn this year.

Probably some loss of power too.

If not, at least I will have a new kit to play with. :D

I decided.

BK9, the King conquers all.

For my get home bag (that I don't actually have) I think I would keep a tactool in the vehicle where I can get to it. Also, where it wouldn't be a safety hazard in a crash. Use this for smashing windows and cutting straps. In the bag I would have a tweener and a SAK. If all goes "well" I can make it out of the truck with my bag and tactool in hand. Then I'll be on my merry way.

Edit: The 9 is a good choice too. I should really start reading the whole thread before I post. :)

I'd also have to say BK3 (tactical ice scraper) paired with a smaller knife like the 16 or a 14/24. Between the two you've got it all covered, you can chop, baton, break-and-enter, pry your way out of a vehicle, carve, slice, and generally mess things up. And yes, you can get the ice off your windshield :)

100% this.

BK9 is what I would add to that kit. Unless you needed something to pry with then the BK2. Hmm. I see your point. Maybe it really doesn't matter which one you bring. But it's fun to think about.

I say: BK9 for the chopping jobs but bring the BK2 as well. For extreme cold i may want the extra thickness of the BK2 for peace of mind if you gotta baton.

I know you already made up your mind but I vote the bk5! I know it will do well in your area.

In a survival situation what benefit would the 5 offer that the 9 would not? i understand it as a skinning food prep large steak knife. and while you will hope to have meat to eat its not logical to think you will be cleaning large game often if the SHTF. i would use my 11 for skinning and concentrate on squirrels and other small mammals that are easier to obtain than large game.

Reasonable question ww but the original question was re a GHB which may or may not be different than a survival situation. I guess the best way to answer it is to flip it back to ya.... what does the 9 bring that the 5 (or 4 or 7 or 12 etc) doesn't? Both are .188 chunks of crovan. Yeah, the grinds, lengths, etc are different but I think they'll all get you home and the differences are not life and death for purposes of this exercise. I live in the Smokies and my car has an axe in the trunk. If I'm in my truck, going to my hideouts or driving around during or after a storm my husky saw with gas and bar oil (and an axe) is with me. Trees fall in roads all the time around here. Afoot, trying to get home, I don't think I'll be chopping much and a 14 will do fine. Like I said, they're all fine and any one of em will get you home. Now if I was dumped in the woods naked....

So, carried the 9 with me today. Got lots of comments, from the guy at my storage unit, to the lady behind the counter at my favorite "stop and rob", to my boss, who wanted to know WTF is that???

Hmmmmmmm......obvious big knife is obvious. And big.

:D

Yeah, but did you sell any?

Go with the 16 and 2 extra pair of good wool socks. Odds are you will spend more time walking home than chopping zombies. You TN guys get cold weather that last for days and not nearly as much hassle from Johnny Law if you get picked up for "vagrancy" .

If you do not get the reference then you are not old enough. :)

Somebody mentioned hitch hiking... I bet nobody would F**K with you with the King strapped on your side or pack. Those crazy F***ers would think twice before pulling some Moose rape!

I would probably rock that one inside the pack, unless I wanted to raise some eyebrows... My winter car kits are in totes so if I went into a gas station, work etc carrying a large tote with a knife strapped to it, I would expect lots of comments at best...But northern Il folk are a bit nervous about anything having to do with self sufficiency.

Easy solution. Get a big pink top hat and a feather boa and no one will even notice the 9.

a bk2 can break into a car or building , do fire prep and still be used as a weapon . in a real world git home situation there will not be anything graceful with knife work . time will be an issue with everything you do and whatever knife you choose make sure it can take abuse . and make sure you have a 14 somewhere !

Man, this thread was the kick in the pants I needed to finally get my own winter bag ready. Thanks, Moose!
