Elmax?????

I roll with 60 usually. If I make a knife for my wife: 55 ;)

I'd bet 61-62 would still perform well under moderate use. Can't say enough good things about the BU steels!

I have a custom coming in Elmax at 60-61 as a hunting knife. I'll give a review once it arrives

I love Elmax, but I have a hell of a time hand finisning it. I'll use up what I have but CPM154 is my favorite steel S a maker. I also prefer USA products.

Down with stainless, long live plain carbon!

Ha!:p

I have enjoyed following this thread(especially that alloying chart). Good stuff guys. I am a closet 3V fan... don't tell the other cavemen, eh?

Come to the bright side, my friend. Don't be scared. Try it. :D

"plain carbon" steels are not going away, nor should they. In good hands, they can perform very, very well.

We also have options of more complex alloys that can also perform very, very well - including parameters like toughness and ease of sharpening that rival the old-school stuff. I'll put my Elmax blades up against mine or anyone else's made of 1084, 1095, O1, D2, CPM-154, CPM-3V, etc... and they will all do really well over a wide range of tests.

We are in the Golden... no, Platinum Age of astounding, widely-available top-quality materials and techniques. Pick a set of design/performance attributes, and it's actually pretty easy to find the stuff we need that will allow us to achieve our goals.

Nah... what fun is having a knife that you don't have to take care of?:) We have had informal contests with a mix of alloyed and plain carbon blades. It seemed to depend more on the maker's craftsmanship, than the steel used. That is not meant to downplay the obvious benefits and potential of high alloyed steel. It just puts things into perspective, for me at least.
