embarrassing knife

I had one knife that I was sort of embarrassed to own, then I sold it recently. It was a Gerber Answer, and now I have a better opinion of it. A fairly good knife, but I could have done better for the same price. I like all of the blades I have now.

I picked up a CRKT guppie...... little knife and wrench...... light and bit kit..... the name alone is painful enough but it is actually a cute little bugger lol

Cold Steel rubber Tanto training knife.

When I had to explain to my 9yr.old son's daycare supervisor why he brought it to school
:o

I can't believe the Spartan was mentioned a couple times...it's a good looking knife that will embarass "tough" folders 2-4x the price and the specs and images were available before ordering...

-snip-

Well part of the embarrassment is at the time of ordering, I was quite please with my self and very please when it arrived, but then over time... I slowly learned that it dosnt do anything very good except being an over sized "beast" of a knife. I showed it to a couple friends I got more of a "what do you need that thing for?" than a "thats a nice knife".

Basically, I was embarrassed about buying and showing off, a mall ninjas dream knife. IMO of course

Well......

I just ordered mine: the Cold Steel whopper Espada.

Have just always sorta wanted to have the "largest pocketknife in the world" (or close enough to it).

Absolutely no sane reason; think I'll take it to the range and whip it out for the guys to hoot at.

Shame on me for publicly even admitting it. :)

TOPS The Tracker (the knife from the movie The Hunted). It did do a lot of things, but it didn't do any of them very well.

Jabber jabber jabber.
Somehow I doubt there's much that you own that wouldn't embarrass or disgust lots of people on this forum, myself included.

I'm not embarrassed by it, but the one knife in my collection that I really don't like is a Microtech Mini SOCOM. I won it in a raffle to support the family of Bob Bartoli after his untimely passing. He was a great guy. I can't say as much about the knife I won. It's a good knife, don't get me wrong. But it's a tanto, it has a beadblasted blade, partially serrated, rubber handle inserts, and it's tip-down carry. Pretty much everything I dislike in a knife. But I still carry and use the knife in his memory. Plus it only cost me the $15 raffle entry. I'm proud to own it.

At one time, I had a WSK "Tracker", that was made in Pakistan. I traded it to a friend. I also have a Kershaw Spec Bump. I'm not embarassed by the knife, it just happened to open in my pocket, one day, cutting a hole through my jeans and the leather sofa I sat on at a car dealership.

I want one. It'd make a nice folding chopper providing you use it judiciously. Nobody laughed at the WW2 folding machete. This new one just happens to be marketed by a rotund man in short shorts. :p

I dont own one, but from the pics the Espada dont seem that bad, like 42blades ^^ said it would make a good pocket chopper, and the blade shape looks like it would be a good pig sticker

Dagon - compare it to your Pohl Force - the difference in AUS 8 and D2 ain't no $110-$150, not even 10% of that - both made in Taiwan.

That is a very fair point. I consider my big Pohl Force (which is the Alpha One, in 440c by the way) and for fixed blades my Spyderco Schempp Rock as my "big stupid grin" knives. The difference with embarassing is indeed subtle! In the case of the Pohl Force, it is a proven service knife (German commandos in Afghanistan carried it), and for me it's of course total overkill, I don't edc it, but it is huge fun at barbecues! In some way, the Spartan doesn't give me that feeling. Yes, it is technically quite ok for the price with a good lock, but I don't get that big stupid grin feeling. A weak, non-objective answer? Probably!

Sure, I've had my share of cheap and horrible knives. What does one expect when you start buying them when you are 11 or 12? To my credit, or maybe luck, I never did buy any cheap chinese-made knives when I was a kid, just because they looked cool. I've got a box full of cheap Shrade, kershaws, Swiss-army type knives, boy scout knives, and a ton of slipjoints that are rusting away. The thing that I see when I look at those knives is that they were absolutely practical and every one of them was used, loved, and eventually replaced, because I knew very little about maintenance.

As I got older, I started to realize that there was some value in researching what I need and buying quality knives. For the most-part, that philosophy has paid off and I'm really happy with almost everything I own. However, a few weeks ago, I got caught up talking with a guy running a knife table at a gunshow and he had some Ka-Bars. I knew I had wanted something for wilderness camping that I could depend on and I wasn't about to buy a Bear Gryll's knife. So, I picked up a Ka-Bar 1221 (7" fighter, rubber grip) and was thrilled that I'd found my utitlity knife. I got home and started researching these...and quickly found that though I'd gotten a nice knife, it came with the wrong sheath and box. Whatever, I can live with that. Then, found that I paid way too much. They're all over the place for $60-$75 and I realized that I got taken because I was impulsive. Not a bad knife, but every time I see it, it's embarrassing to me, because of what I paid for it.

Dagon it is good enough reasons for me  Life is too short and fragile not to have and love the things that give us those grins if they are within our means.

Cold Steel knives have served a lot of military members well for years as well. The only folders holding up long term when I was in Iraq first wave 2003 and 2004-05 were Cold Steel and Spyderco.

I was'nt embarrased back then, I was a Bad*SS. We are talking early 70's I had 3 different sized 007 folders. It was two pieces of wood with thin tin liners and a crappy polished blade. The Big one was over 10" long open. You carried in your pack pocket and through the lanyard hole you ran a colored shoe lace through. This would stick out of your pack pocket with the lace swinging in the wind. Everyone in the Bronx had 'em and you were able to buy them at the local Bodega ( local store ). John
