Emergency Items around your neck?

Pants have pockets for a reason - Whatever is around your neck will be a leash

That's kind of how I picture it too.

I appreciate a good neck knife, but I'm not a fan of having heavy stuff draped around my neck.

I have pockets, lot's of them, and I use each one.

But, if I had to, firesteels are lite, so I'd go for one of those.

I don't carry anything on cord around my neck, it's potentially dangerous but mostly just annoying.

Yeah I find it annoying too. However I do have a survival gear on my keychain which is just a small length of paracord. My advice would be photon II light for the flashlight. I've had mine for years and haven't even changed the battery yet. I have a:
Fox 40 whistle
Photon II
Firesteel
SAK classic

Of course I generally have a knife on the belt and other gear in my pockets.

The only thing I like around my neck is a necklace I received at 18 and my wife.

I wear a survival necklace of sorts, There is nothing revolutionary on there stuff that I might need in a pinch
LED
Whistle
Glow in the dark compass
Fire steel
Striker
and a capsule of prepped tinder

the 2 most used items are the led and the firesteel

I have two things I wear around my neck. Looking at them they may seem to be a lot but when I have them on, I forget they are there.
One has a One-Handed Trekker, Boy Scout Fire Steel and pill fob filled with petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls. The other has a Fox 40 whistle and a Photon Freedom Micro light. They are on paracord, but I keep them under my shirt so I don't think that there is much risk in them getting caught on something.

When I'm out I am usually wearing my Casio Pathfinder which has a compass. Doing some checks, I think that the compass is at least as accurate as button compasses.

I don't really understand the reasoning behind a neck kit. I can understand a small kit on your belt that can be used should you get seperated from your main pack.
I can never really see a situation where you become seperated from your pants and belt !!!

^ sometimes things on your belt are going to prevent you from wearing a waist belt on a pack- these generally need to be cinched down pretty good- I guarantee you don't want something residing in between that pack waist belt and waist- well not for more than 1/4 miles anyways :)

I too can't stand things around my neck. And quite frankly, anything small enough to hang off the neck is small enough to attach to a knife's sheath.

Here I have a Suunto clip compass, nanostriker, innova light. What you don't see is some fishing line, hooks and sinkers under the bike-tube bands (too much of a hassle to undo it all for the photo) along with some safety pins and duct tape on the sheath:

Here it is all together:

I'm still looking for a nice, flat whistle that I can add to this mini set up.

I was thinking about wrapping the whole thing in cord, but decided against it for bulk. This sheath is an in-pocket one, and my EDC, so I want it as light and comfortable as possible.

My BK11 is survival gear that happens to be hanging from my neck as I type this. Sometimes I'll also have a compass/whistle there and maybe game calls (though I don't guess the calls count).

There are a couple of reasons. A whistle is one of your most important safety items - you can not yell as long and as loud as a whistle. Convenience, security and ease of access are good reasons. If you fall or in some way can not get to the items in you pack you will be glad to have a it around your neck.

As far as pants pockets, if find the weight in the pocket and rubbing my leg annoying. Also, some of my pants - rain and soft shell pants - do not have pockets or they are small

I need to snap some pics of my neck kit.

I run pretty light. An ESEE Izula on an adjustable neck lanyard with a Going Gear misch firesteel, PJ cotton ball straw ranger banded on and a whistle. My must haves are knife and fire and good tinder makes life much easier.

Pict here, Colhane on youtube has a great video on his neck kit.

Pit you are going to the wrong parties than brother,

Seriously though.. I wear my spartan selection of useful items on a dogtag chain around my neck.. they are useful and used allot (not held in preservation like an emergency kit)

Pit this is not directed at you
but there seems to be a tendency for folks to criticize other peoples way of doing things if they dis agree with them.... thats to bad because it;s not conducive to learning...
I;ve heard alot of people takl about the risk of getting strangled by a neck kit.. and Ihave to say i personally am not concerned with this.. Ive been neck carrying knives and gear for many years, and get a fair amount of woods time and have never even had my kit get hung up on a twig much less risk strangling me.. if you use 550 cord than maybe in perfect conditions it could be a risk because of the tensile strength..but a dog tag chain is a different story..
but I like what I like and others like what they like no harm no found
but just to name a few alleged experts who seem to be fans of wearing gear around you neck
Cody Lundin
Les Stroud
Mors Korchanski
Tony Nestor
and the list goes on
Because they do it does that mean you should?? No... experiment with it and see if you like it and if it works for you..
I've found it does.. though there are some limitations, and complications.. as with anything. but in this instance for me I think the "juice is worth the squeeze"

Oh and I’m in before the “you’ll be found dead swinging from your neck knife!” scares. That freaked me out so much I now tear all my shirts at the neck like Hulk Hogan and wear Velcro shoes! Ya never know! :D

LOL...I was waiting for a comment like that about the pants !:D:thumbup:

I do always wear a whistle and watch strap compass around my neck and have at times worn a small necker but there is no way I could wear a mini kit that many on here wear. Man I'd feel like Mr T !:thumbdn:

nothinghappenedtoday.... TOPS knives has a 3 chambered flat whistle in their fire making kit... I'm sure there are others
