  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Emergency Items around your neck?

I have never had my neck knife para cord get caught on anything. If it ever does happen, and I get hung, thank God I have a knife only inches away.

Anything item bigger than "really small" around my neck annoys the friendly out of me. Swaying back and forth as I walk... arrgghh.

So, I have a lanyard (heh, it's just an old bootlace :-) with a whistle. Soon I'll be adding one of the Microlight waterproof LED torches.

Personal story: On a trip many years ago I was sunning myself on a rock when I heard a whistled emergency call. I got up, started jogging down the valley. It was just under ten minutes of jogging later before I heard the voices, and at that point I could see the people. Moral of the story: Whistle sound carries much further than voice sound (and is much less tiring to produce). CARRY A WHISTLE!

Second personal story: On a trip many years a go, a trip in the snow, a fellow tramper needed to use his whistle. Unfortunately, It was frozen solid. Moral lof the story: In the cold, keep the whistle inside your shirt.

Final note: The whistle-blowing situation turned out fine, no-one hurt.

For quite a time I carried dogtags on my neck
They were heavy!

Seriously, I only carry my compass round my neck. I carry it on the outside of my clothing and the compass goes into my front pocket so it does not bump and swing around.
Walking in England in foul weather in clouds or whiteouts, I have to take instant bearings as a hole in the clouds appear.

A few of my choices, depending on what I’m doing is my firesteel necklace; or one of my ranger bead setups. If I’m going with the ranger beads/compass/whistle, I’ll still have a small firesteel on my person, and this larger kit in the pack.

I use a victorinox travel pouch around my neck. It actually is unnoticeable when I keep it over the shoulder. In this photo, it holds camera, firestarter, emergency blanket, whistle, small compass, water pouch, car keys and $20. I chose this over a belt pouch because of the backpack. I also have tinder/lighter (wrapped in plastic) in my front pocket.

The knife on the backpack is Mora. It's over 40 years old, and I believe the sheath is cardboard (?) but it doesn't mind getting wet. On my belt is a One Handed Trekker.
