Emergency Prep Knife Ideas

I carry a backpack around in my car with stuff I will probably never need and the list would be too long for here. As far as knives go.
In the car door pocket, a Buck multitool and a small CRKT Mustang folder.
in my pocket a small buck 373 pocket knife.
In the backpack a Gerber hatchet that has a small fixed blade knife in the handle, a VIC Swiss rescue knife, An old Edgemark Explorer I bought generations ago that I keep for sentimental reasons (looks just like a Buck 110), and to top it off a huge CRKT Sawtooth with 6 1/2" blade that chops thought branches and wood like butter.

I figure these will cover most emergencies.
Of course there's a whole lot of other stuff in there too. Being retired Coast Guard I'm Semper Paratus.

I have a lot of respect for you Coasties. I even considered going into the CG Reserve but I the CG wanted to drop me in rank to an E-3. That was just to much of a drop for me to consider.

I have to ask, how do you like the Vic rescue knife? I have considered picking one of those up. You can never have enough rescue knives.:)

You are probably right. Haven't even gotten into the realm of stropping yet. I know I've seen you do it on your vids but any specific recommendations of such a setup with links to a paid dealer?

I am not sure who the paid retailers are, but I can recommend the compounds I've used, KSF has a CBN emulsion that works good also you can shop from Tom at Jende Industries or Ken Schwartz who also has emulsions and sprays
They're just a few facts to help you navigate to your selection.

CBN vs Diamond, which one? Honestly, I can't tell the difference when stropping. So that's not going to be a deciding factor

Emulsion vs Spray? Emulsions are thicker and don't need as much of a shake before use. The sprays require a good shake and apply faster.

They're subtle difference and details for sure but I am too lazy to write them since it would take a few paragraphs :D

AND

In the end, they both work.

lastly, avoid falling into the stropping rabbit hole, just get a 1 micron grit size and be done.

thats the best all around grit size, the coarse grits are fun but load up fast. The finer grits are exciting but can over polish the edge.

1 micron is the best if I could only have one.

that is what I use the most unless I am bored and am playing with different finishes.

In the end, the strop only enhances the edge you made on the stone.

You can't strop a bad edge to an amazing edge.

its about $30-50 for a 1-2oz bottle depending on what you buy, The 2oz emulsion bottle looks like it will last me about 6-9 years at my current consumption so they last a while, the sprays might be less.

You can make a strop but I do enjoy the paddle strop from KSF.

I left out the pasted strop compounds because the CBN and Diamond works better for knives, especially super steels

A big thanks to everyone that chimed in with ideas and suggestions. I have printed a copy of this thread for Scott to read. Maybe he will join our forum after reading your comments.:)
