I just got a new A100 and it seems to have a little blade play, not side to side but up and down. If the blade is open it is solid but if its partially open I can move the blade a little by pushing and pulling on the blade. I have tried tightening the pivot screw but it doesn't seem to make any difference. This is my first Emerson so I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and if its normal?

Clean the lockface to make sure that there isn't any oil or grease.

the lock face is clean and when the blade is locked open its solid, it wiggles when the blade is unlocked.

Ive never heard of somebody concerned with a little play that is only present in the partially opened state. I am not trying to be a jerk, I just never heard of it. is this of concern to a lot of people? I don't understand why it would be.

Every folder I Have does this. Even my CRK. There was just a thread about this exact thing in the CRK forum.

I am not necessarily complaining, its just I have not had any other folders that have any play around the pivot when its open or closed. The A100 seems to be a solid knife and I like it, I was curious if this was normal with emersons or am I being too fussy that's all.

If the blade is partially open it has a little blade play. If it's fully open it is solid. - That makes no sense whatsoever.

If the lock face is fully engaged with the tang and the blade still wiggles–up and down or back and forth–it is called blade play. However, and I think this might be what you are referring to, if the lock face consistently fails to fully engage with the tang or fully engages and then "un-engages" this is called lock slip. I have a Mini A100 that had lock slip and I tried sanding the tang lightly, coloring the tang with a Sharpie for improved traction and increased the lockbar tension all to no avail. I sent it back to Emerson and a month or so later it's as good as new.

Yeah my explanation isn't that great so I'll give it another shot. When the knife is in the fully open position with the lock bar against the tang, its all good I can grab the blade and the handle and they act as a solid unit no movement. I have no issues with the lock up, its pretty early and solid. When the knife is not locked up ( blade is halfway or any other position other than fully open) I can grab the blade in one hand and the handle in the other gently push or pull slightly towards the pivot and the blade moves, almost as if the pivot pin is slightly smaller than the pivot hole in the blade. Like I said its not a huge deal I have a few other folders BM,CRK,ZT and none of them seem to do this that's all.

Like this JWH?

I remember a knife I once owned doing that. Seems like it was a knock off someone gifted me. It did feel cheap.

I know exactly what you are talking about, I can do the same with my CQC-7. I'm pretty sure that it's because there is some 'slop' between the pivot pin and the hole in the blade that the pin runs through. It's the same with every Emerson folder I've owned, it would be interesting to know if they designed it to be that way for a purpose?

I have a couple of back-lock Spydercos with the same characteristic. If I'm not looking for it (grabbing the blade, when half open, and trying to make it shift slightly) I never notice. So, I just stopped doing that and I'm back to enjoying the knives.
