I am looking at these two knives and I am wondering which would have a stronger lock? I assume most would say the cold steel tri ad lock beats the liner lock of the emerson. I have never seen any tests on the emerson like the tests cold steel does on their knives. Would it be safe to say the cold steel is a tougher knife than the emerson?

The Cold Steel Recon 1 hands down, No doubt at all, don't even have think about that one.

Man, this is a can of worms.

Cold Steel's Tri-Ad lock is with out a doubt the strongest, toughest lock, and most foolproof lock on the market. I dare anyone to prove otherwise, and I dare say that Lynn Thompson would too.

The Emerson's liner lock won't take the stabbing, throwing, and overall general abuse that the Cold Steel will. They don't take well to being thrown, or having their strength tested by hanging/pulling on the handle.

What you'll get with the Emerson are a blade with a little better edge retention, and some more quality fit & finish. But honestly, that Recon 1 tanto is going to be something you could bet your life on without hesitation.

Cold Steel all the way, man.

I have to agree, the triad lock is probably the best lock out there currently imho. keepem sharp

What in the hell are you going to do to a folder to make the lock fail??

Like I said, this is a can of worms.

BUT in all honesty, the CS Tri-Ad lock is objectively stronger/tougher than anything else out there. I'm just providing my $0.02 answer to the OP's question.

I guess what we each end up buying ultimately comes down to what will impress our friends and scare our enemies.

regular work. I have had this happen twice where I was actually cut. Both liner locks, and price wise both the same price as my Recon 1 (old Axis lock design).

My older brother was unfortunate enough to actually require surgery on the tendon in his right thumb. He was cutting rubber! Trying to pierce rubber, and bam. Also with a name brand liner lock.

I have had many times where a lock has failed in normal use most times nothing happens.

So I am one, who won't buy a knife I don't trust the lock on.

I have no problem using a slip joint, but I want to know that the knife I am using will behave like a non locking knife before I use it.

Either the Triad lock, or frankly, even the older Ultra lock (Axis lock) will be stronger over all, and certainly withstand shock much better.

The Emerson will be a nice knife.

I do like the Aus8 steel just for ease of sharpening and generally it is a decently tough steel. I have been using mine for 10 years with no problems or issues.

Find and example of each, and hold them and if possible play with the locks and use them then make your decision.

I just don't feel as confident with liner locks any more. (there are many many great ones, which I would have no qualms about using, but if I am buying one with my money, Frame lock, or Axis lock, or Triad lock, heck, I wish they would release a higher end Ram lock like on the pocket bushman.......LOVE that one. Just upgrade the steel, and make the handle more attractive, and I would buy another one in a heart beat!).

Thanks for posting.

I was wondering the same thing today about the linerlock on my Blackhawk Pointman.I wonder how much weight you can dangle on those?

I'm going to buy another Lawman or something with the tri-Ad by Cold Steel.
I'll just have to sand down the G10 under the pocket clip on the Cold Steel so i can actually clip it on & off my pants without it being a big strenuous tug & my pants coming up to my armpit! Really, the way they come you can parachute out at 40,000' & never have it come off your pants.

To answer you question, most will probably agree that the triad is the stronger lock. THIS DOES NOT MEAN that the emerson has a weak lock. Both knives have very adequate locks.;)

personally, i would take ANY EKI folder over ANY cold steel folder, i dont care for cold steel folders at all, though some of the fixed blades arent bad.

We all have our opinions. :D

I never liked EKI's designs. :)

I have both and carried the Recon 1 more, with the older ultra lock....now they have both been displaced for EDC by the new AK 47, its like the Manix and a Spartan had a kid with a wave feature. ; )

I would go with the Recon1, for me the AUS8A steel sharpens really easy for me, and cold steel makes some of the toughest folders in the business for much better prices than Emerson. BUT, Emerson has their place in the elite of Tactical knife makers and if you want to spend the extra dough, I can in no way blame you. I have owned many Emersons and liked them all. You can't go wrong either way. The only thing that hurts Emerson is their nonstop production of Linerlock Folders ONLY, with a couple of framelocks also. I personally do not care for Linerlocks, "Just Me", other people have other opinions. But I do like both Cold Steel and Emerson, so you are at a "Fail-Safe" with these two options... Good Luck
