Emerson CQC-7 V. Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto

Well i think cutting through a bunch(10 or so) of crushed cans(see pic) is a good way to test how durable the edge is(seeing if it would chipout or deform)...but if you have something else you would like to see the 7 cut through, that you think would be a better test, im open to suggestions...ill even post pics;)

The 154CM Emerson uses isn't exactly maximum hardness. I think you would find it hard to have the edge chip out.

Well when having a discussion about tactical knives don't they all have to meet the pre-requisite of being able to cut through a car hood, doors, and roof? :D

Already know that 7s have been there done that, wonder if the hollow grind on the CS can take it?

well i guess i can confirm that now...it didnt chip out or deform in anyway and could still cleanly slice paper after about 10 cans...

Interesting you ask about the Recon 1. The CS Lawman and Mini Lawman do it.

However, I didn't find a video demonstrating that kind of strength for the Recon 1. There is though a video on Youtube showing a fellow pounding a Recon 1 through a 55 gallon drum:

The reason why we keep seeing these threads is because there are a lot of people who really don't know the differences in the different lock Strengths. ;)

If CRK, Spyderco or Emerson had grabbed Andrew Demko and his Tri-Ad Lock it would be on the cover of every knife magazine, Been voted the Best at the Blade Show and people would be shouting from the Mountain tops.

It goes to show that the what the best really is sometimes has more to do with Politics and BS than how good the product is. That is really a shame because it really doesn't do the customers a good service in the end.

WOW!!!!!!! did you nail that. These new CS products are amazing. Well put together, overbuilt and with a lock that has raised the bar. I don't care what people think of the company, for the money everyone should at least try it and form their OWN opinion.

well the cqc 7 is the better knife aside from the lock strength, and i prefer a liner lock or an ril to any other lock, so the cqc 7 for me.

WHAT KNIFE DO YOU LIKE BETTER, thats all that matters

thats an awesome job. i really want to do something similar to some of the bigger triad lock knives, like the full size lawman and the new recon 1. i think a full size lawman with the coating removed and grooved g10 handles would look awesome.

the mini lawman and the mini ak-47 are excellent edc's, light and small but extremely strong.

It's a shame most of their stuff is made overseas. Do they make any in the U.S.A.?

The Recon.

I don't own a Recon but I have handled a few cold steel folders with the triad lock, standard lockback, pocket bushman and even liner lock tilites.

I don't care what the hoopla is going here but Emersons are not overall "superior" and they generally don't have better fit and finish Than Cold Steel knives.

Emersons use slightly better blade or I can even just say better blade steel and are made here in the US but that is as far as it goes. I am also familiar with Emersons by the way.

I don't know where the person who says Cold Steel has average fit and finish is getting his knives from but almost every Cold Steel knife I have handled to date including the older models have top notch fit and finish that often puts most popular name makers to shame. Sorry to break the bad news to those who enjoy believing otherwise but Cold Steel is generally in the Benchmade class when it comes to fit and finish.

Despite CS's crazy videos and antics they have never avoided or danced around the issue of lock safety on their folders it's something they always have taken seriously and they have always been upfront about what their locks can and cannot handle. That is important to me.

Get the Emerson. It is a superior knife.

While the Emerson is a superior knife, the CS with triad lock is quite a knife.

The CS you'll have no qualms about using roughly, the Emerson may well take abuse, but I'd be less likely to subject it to such.

Get 'em both, and be really happy.

Thanks for the encouragement! I also grooved my CS Recon 1 clip point, but didn't remove the finish on the blade. Definitely feels better.

While I don't know if any of their stuff is made here, as I only have two knives, I'm not going to dump on them for bringing a more affordable product to market, even if it means having product made overseas.

Even if everything they made were produced in the US, there are folks who would dump on them for other things.

You can say that again. BTW, their videos certainly prove their points.

Given the price tag on an Emerson and that you are considering buying go ahead and buy both since the price of the Cold Steel won't add much to the total cost.

You'll get to use both of them. This would be the best of both worlds and you can do your own comparison review. Maybe you can post it here with pics:eek:

The Cold Steel triad lock folders are easy to disassemble and reassemble. The parts just fall into place (perfect fit) and stay.

Their videos have been discussed many times on BF and though they use it for marketing dont think other companies dont do the same things to their knives behind closed doors.
