Emerson CQC-7 ?

you really should check out the emerson cqc-8, maybe the super 8. It's one big badass tactical blade with a good amount of utility. Plus its waved. aka - the banana knife.

Hi Edwood -

I have one - it is a no-nonsense knife that cuts fine.

The chisel grind seems like it would make it awkward for tasks like food prep, but it works well enough.

Mine has no lockup issues - and the knife is very well made. My example is from 1999.

I had used the knife and abused it some, and had messed up the handle scales. In addition, I did not want the serrations, so I shipped the knife off to Phillip Dobson and he transformed the knife into the following -

I like the design of the original CQC-7 and will likely buy another to have in the collection.

The 7 is not my all time favorite Emerson but I will tell you if it was my only one I would never feel disadvantaged. The cqc-7 is true Emerson and I love mine. No disappointments.

Mine is the CQC-7V , the first of his new Prestige series. Sort of tan-color rather than black.
Yes, it's a very strong knife. Very reliable. I believe in it.

Did you get it yet Ed? It would be nice to hear your feedback on it.

I might be arriving at LAX in a few days; Im head down to Plaza Cutlery and im thinking of pick up an Emerson. I’m still thinking about witch one.

I’m of course going to test it out when I get it; I will post some pictures as always.

I had a CQC7 (made by Benchmade) from the 1st production run when I went through my not-brief-enough "tactical" knife phase many years ago. The ergos were crude, boxy and uncomfortable; the blade became wobbly unless the pivot was over-tightened; it had a very late lockup (the locking liner ended up pegged against the opposite liner in short order); two of the three clip screws fell out and the gimmicky and relatively useless blade profile was chisel-ground on the wrong side for a right-handed user (visually indexing a cut with anything approaching precision was out of the question). It was very cheaply finished, prone to edge chipping and just dog ugly. Most disappointing hype-driven knife I've ever purchased.

I'm in the love with my new CQC7V :).

That being said, go to the store, handle the ones that catch your eye, and choose which fit you best.

Nothing's wrong with all of the suggestions, but I agree that the CQC-7's handle shape is very comfortable for a variety of positions. Having used one for many yrs (I have a '99 CE that I bought new). It has seen use all over & including defensively. However, IMHO, the CQC-7V (The Prestige model with V-grind & tan scales) is an improvement in every way.

The G10's grippier & the V-grind's more utilitarian w/o taking away from the original's effectiveness. I would at least check out the 7V over the standard 7. It's a good all around size, too.

Ed I`d say get one, you`ll love it. I`ve had mine now for 2 weeks, and there is no contest to what`s going into my pocket. The bladeshape makes for great piercing, and cutting. The handle is very comfortable in any grip, and like all Emersons this one is just solid. A great addition to your gear.

The 7's nice but the blade for me is quite stubby but for the uses you mentioned it would probably be fine. Myself i prefer the eight though. I had a custom 8 with the thick liner lock. I should have kept that one the customs are a whole different animal and really built well imho. Good luck with your decision and as mentioned the 7v is nicer than the straight 7. Stay safe brother and watch your six.

The 7 is great. That was what got me into tacticals. The 7 is so tactical, it pisses CLP and its turds have MOLLE gear!

Btw. Edwood, consider getting a super CQC-7, it migt be a bit more useful for the kind of tasks you have in mind, I remember when I first got my 7, and I thought, wow this is a small blade.
