Emerson or Benchmade?

I guess its to save money, only one side to grind, the other side can be flat ground in a machine. I have always thought of emerson as a self defense knife only maker so it doesn´t matter, would you feel the difference between getting stabbed by a convential grind and a one sided one? Do you die slower or faster with a one sided grind?

Thought I would throw my .2 in...

I just purchased an Emerson CQC-10 and I've been using a Benchmade 950 Rift.

I had done a lot of reading about Emerson Knives online before making my purchase. I had read about the chisel grinds, lock problems, etc. but also read about all the people who were/are happy with their knives. Decided, what the hell, and went to the store and took a look at one in person. I liked it so I bought one. In comparison to my Rift, which have similar price points, it's much sharper out of the box and the grinds are more visually appealing. The two "satin" finishes are different... both are very nice ( to me). The emerson has a chisel ground edge that is left handed. This works out in my favor because I'm left handed so I have absolutely no problems with it. It also negates one of the major selling points of emersons which is the wave feature. No big deal for me, as I see the wave feature getting in the way for EDC.

Obviously, the 950 Rift has the Benchmade Axis lock and the Emerson has a liner lock. Both lock up 100% for me. I spine whacked the emerson (Regret doing this now because it accelerates wear) and it did not fail. The Rift is a much faster knife if you don't include the wave feature.

That's all I can think of at the moment but if anyone wants me to make any other comparisons just say something.

haven't handled the CQC 15 but handled a bunch of other emersons and own a Horseman. if I had to choose I would pick my 710 over my Emerson. Both are fantastic knives, but the 710 is the knife I prefer.

As for the Para 2. it's a fantastic knife. Can't afford one yet, but I would bet for 'utilitarian' purposes that is the best. The 710 works very well (I'm doing it right now), but keep in mind you will need to sharpen that recurve.

I'm super happy with my 710, and you probably would be as well if you go with it.

I don't know if it was mentioned but the Rift is about a half inch thick which is the same as the 710. I would imagine the Emerson is roughly the same. I don't notice much difference between the 710 and 950 in pocket. Not sure if that makes a difference when thinking about the 710 unless there is something else about the 950 you don't like.

The CQC-10 is a tad thicker compared to my Rift. Both are hardly noticeable and the weight is negligible.

The only reason I mentioned that is because he said he has experience with the 950 and that it was too thick in pocket to be comfortable. Just wanted him to be aware that the other 2 knives he is looking at are going to be very similar in the pocket to the 950.
