Emerson Sheepdog Spearpoint--HUGE Disappointment

Attached is a pic of the blade of the CQC 8 I referenced earlier in this thread. I did not call anybody about it; I didn't pay for extra shipping; I just ordered it. In fact, it was this grind on this blade that prompted me to order the Super Commander. I don't know what to say; I can't fathom that a dealer would tell you that a chipped blade is the "best" he's seen.

Amazing blade. Awe inspiring. Has me missing my short lived Super CQC-8. It was a newer model, without the backspacer.

I actually wasn't terribly concerned with the top quarter of the edge leading to the tip having some preexisting small chips and burrs. I was aiming on putting on my own edge, regardless. The proverbial shit had hit the fan and my blood pressure began to elevate when what was a perfectly centered blade upon first removing the knife from it's little plastic wrapper / bag, veered dramatically and settled a hair's width from the liner, the moment I SLIGHTLY loosened the pivot. Immediately followed by it crashing into the liner because I applied an ordinary, usual and standard amount of pressure when opening the blade. Even this RIDICULOUS fact didn't dissuade me from keeping it, as blade centering instructions were provided by Emerson. However, I guess I was unlucky, as I mentioned above, having spent approximately 72 hours trying every trick in the book to create a reasonable distance between the blade and the liner, as it was evident centering on my particular knife was not in the cards, short of sending it to Emerson to do their magic. Had the Emerson representative not informed me it was their "busy season" and as such, IF, AND ONLY IF (which was painted in a dubious and pessimistic light with a long winded recitation in which my liner-crashing, centering dilemma was disturbingly categorized as one of mere "fit and finish") they deemed the issue to warrant repair, which I had good reason to think would be dubious based upon what was conveyed to me, it would be "a long time" without the knife. Moreover, during the process of trying to adjust the centering so it would at least not crash into the liner when engaging and disengaging, I stripped half the screws and the other half were well on their way to being stripped. No. I don't have cheap tools and yes, I have assembled and disassembled hundreds of knives, the vast majority of which, without issue.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, I am strongly considering giving it another chance. The picture you provided is enticing and I now have more time and money on my hands in case I need to work it.

QUICK UPDATE: I've now used up about half a pencil's graphite, and opened/closed my Sheepdog hundreds of times. The good news is that the lock is no longer sticky enough to require two hands or a tool to disengage. It's still not pleasant to unlock, but at least it's manageable. The bad news is that it now locks up pretty consistently in the 75% range, regardless of how lightly I flick it open. I fear this Emerson will only last me a fraction as long as my previous EDC (16 years) before needing a trip back to manufacturer.
