Enlighten me to another brand.

one sweet Spyderco is the Southard ....flipper, check...nice blade shape, check...good steel, check...no stupid leaf-shape with a hole In the blade lol

But for that kind of money I think it should have a “super steel” (20cv, 204p, M390)....really cool knife tho, maybe I’ll give the spydies another chance

I'll look into it.
One Spydy that has piqued my interest is the Yojimbo but it's over budget and it G10.

Nothing wrong with G10 or 154cm/D2/S30V but I want to branch out into unknown (to me) materials.
I wouldn't mind carbon fiber either since I only own one with CF scales

Did I miss something? Spyderco Southard is CTS 204p. One of my all time favorites, btw.

No I just checked the site again and they make several versions in different types of steel, but the only one they have in stock now is s30

For prying bring a fixed blade made of s7. If you have only the zt, you have to survive the rest of the trip before you can send it back for replacement. I use the back of the blade to search for eadible crisps/critters (no failures), except for cicada time—I just place a net over the holes and get me weeks worth of scramp.
I almost threw up.

I agree. If you would please go back and read what I initially wrote, I said they were good slicers.

I want more than that.
So you want them to penetrate well? What's wrong with the military/PM2 shape? They're some of the stabbiest knives around, and that's sort of a spyderco leaf shape still. Plus I've never noticed any more difficulty pushing a thinner but wider blade profile (like the manix 2) into cardboard compared to more traditional shapes.

I guess I just don't get how you jumped from them being good at slicing things to somehow being only useful as a box cutter? That's just utterly baffling to me. What exactly are you doing with knives where leaf shaped blades are less practical?

After a decade of martial arts, 5 of them Filipino, I use my knives for self defense. A knife that is a good slicer is a good start, but that's just 1/2 of the equation.

I do not think the leaf blade that Spyderco uses is great for thrusts. That is not just my opinion, but it is the opinion of every knife designer that makes knives.

Maybe you should actually test them out.
Poke some holes in things with them, and you'll likely be saying "Huh, I didn't think they'd work as well as they did."

Opinions, even from noted knife designers, are not as valuable as actual results from testing.

Cool. Couple things here.

First, do you only carry knives for martial tasks, and not for EDC? I ask because it sounds like you're saying that because it doesn't stab into people as well, that's enough of a reason to not carry one. If so, then rock on. But I'd imagine that, because you're on this forum, you actually use knives the vast majority of the time for cutting things that are decidedly not human or living. If anything, a nice thin leaf shape will cut food, plastic, wood, boxes, or whatever better than something ground thicker. This hardly seems a contentious point, so I'll assume those tasks are what you mean by "box cutting".

Second, if you'd consider a PM2 or Military to be in the category of leaf shapes (which I would), I don't think there's many common tactical knives out there that will penetrate better than these knives. I think your comment about "the opinion of every knife designer that makes knives" not thinking those would thrust well is misguided at best, unless you can tell me that the Glessers and Spyderco think that their knives are incapable of thrusting well. Geometry dictates performance here, and there's plenty of fighting knives out there that have broader/thicker geometry than a leaf shaped Spyderco.

We buy different knives. We have different opinions. That's fine.

If you knew the knives that I buy, you would have a better understanding of what I'm looking for in a knife.

I have a Spyderco Military, and it has great steel, but I do not think it is as good all around for defense/offense weapon as an Emerson Kwaiken.

You do YOU. You seem to have a handle on what you like. That is all that counts.

That is an absolute ton of knives. I'm amazed at your ability/willingness to keep track of these.

I will say that I still think something like a PM2 or Military would stab just as well as most of these listed, though.

Benchmade triage or rift come to mind and they are both well within your price range. Another company might get tricky.. I dont love ZT... and my personal favorite blades are CR's sebenzas/umnumzaan(out of your price range) and striders such as the lego PT/SNG (both out of your price range)

May you possibly sell a knife you currently have and add that money to your budget? Maybe get yourself a Sebenza 21 you can snag 1 here like new for around $300 for a small and a few more bucks for a large. With CR you can send the knife back for $25 and get it sent back to you like new.

Spyderco are great as well though you don't seem crazy about them, and another company that comes to mind is cold steel for you price range, however I have owned a few of their knives and have never been impressed, just seems sub-par quality compared to other brands such as BM or CRKs... just my .02

WOW, so do you still have all of these knives or have you let some go? ... and how do you store all of your knives out of curiosity.

I have them all except for a few that I sold or gave away to mom(1) and brother(3).

I bought plastic air tight bins to keep them in, and I am coating them with Renaissance Wax, and placing them in the bin with oxygen eating packs and a humidity detector.

Have about 50+ additional knives on my wish list at the moment.

I actually have a Rift already.
I'm not looking to downsize my collection, just have a little bit of unallocated cash burning a hole in my pocket and before I buy another Benchmade, wanted opinions on other makers I should look at that have a great warranty/CS like BM.
This thread really went off the rails fast. Lol. It's not that I don't like spyderco, (i own a PM2) it's just that their refusal to replace blades (which, let's be honest, that's the wear part) kind of turns me off.
I've heard great things about ZT and the other "wants" I listed are just things that are not currently in my collection that I would like to try.
Hope this clears things up and gets us all back on track.
Again, I think Spyderco makes a great product with lots of different and innovative designs and steels but their warranty stance on blade replacement is a turn off for me. That's just MY opinion.

Maybe I should buy a BM valet? It's got the 390 steel I'd like to try but I'd like to check a few more boxes.
Or maybe the ZT 0460. That gets me the warranty, frame lock, flipper & another CF and kinda checks the TI box but falls short on the steel category w/S35VN.

How does S35VN compare to S30V?

I think you said you already had a contego; kw has an exclusive in m390 steel(g10 and axis lock) but it’s only $189.

S35VN is a bit better of a steel than S30V... However the difference between them isn't night and day, like CM154 vs Either of those steels ... they both blow CM154 away... and other steels such as 8CRMOV are blown out of the water, in terms of edge retention.

Either steel would be fine and sorry about my "off the rails" response earlier ;) but not a huge difference in S35VN and S30V... at that point it comes down to which knife you like better overall
