I thought I'd take a moment to show off a knife that (as we speak) is winging it's way from the warm climes of southern Texas to the chilly (6 degrees this morning) mountain air of western North Carolina.
(Especially since the knife will be grabbed by my missus, boxed and placed under the tree before I get much time for acquaintance.
)
Like many of us, I'm a big fan of the old Remington patterns and am fortunate enough to actually own one vintage R1123.
I'm not (wealthy or) expert enough on these vintage knives to pursue the originals but every now and again I come across a custom version that really turns my head.
Recently, one such example was a stag handled version of the Remington "Bullet" R293 Hunter-Trader-Trapper (HTT) built by Enrique Pena. The knife was built to the original (5" +) dimensions and was a lovely sight to behold.
I couldn't help thinking how nice it would be to own that pattern in a more pocketable size and so I contacted Enrique and asked him if he was willing to scale the pattern down to something just over 4".
My thinking was that this size would retain the aesthetics of the original pattern while still making it an excellent companion.
Enrique was excited by the prospect and really wanted to build a version using his own jigged bone. As the original HTT's were only available with brown jigged bone, I thought this would be a great opportunity to satisfy Enrique's itch while staying somewhat faithful (in concept) to the original.
Here are a couple of images of an original and reproduction HTT to illustrate just what we are discussing here:
And here is Enrique's 4 1/4" "HTT" built with his own jigged bone and CPM-154. (Enrique sounded pretty excited about this one on the phone so I have no doubt (owning one other of his knives already) that this will be a joy to behold.)
I hope to be able to offer some additional preliminary comments about the knife before my wife wrests it from my hands upon its arrival.
Without further ado:
As always, your comments and observations are welcome. :thumbup:
