Tom Walz, of Carbide Processors (Makers of Talonite), has joined us in celebration of our 100,000,000 hit!

In the spirit of the celebration, Tom has offered not one, but two awesome knives!

The second knife will be a custom knife made by a custom maker (to be named later) using Talonite supplied by Tom. This knife will be given away, by way of a cool contest.

Here is how it will work.

Each member is asked to submit a design. At the end of the contest, Friday, March 31st 2000, we will announce the winning design. All entries must be in by the 28th. We will then submit the designs to a board of members who will choose the winner. The winning design and the Talonite will be sent to a maker and the knife will be made to the winning designers specs. Then the winning designer will get the knife! Who knows, if the design is really cool you may see it go into production!

We will accept designs in the form of hand drawings, detailed descriptions or any computer aided drawing. I can see Jim March is already getting ready

Well, here is a design for a blade, that I have been toying with for a while. It tends probably toward a mid to large size for concealed, utility. Here is a smaller one, more a neck-knife size, I suppose. Or maybe even pocket size. Here is almost the same small utility knife, but with two-finger grooves, instead of the one index-finger groove.

HEY! I was actually the first one to post any on-line! That should at least get me honorable mention. Right? Please?!

Here you go...

Note, the drawing is a bit rough, but I think the design is sound.

I started with the Joe Talmadge idea of a Tactical Kitchen Knife and went from there.

Flat spine to reduce drag in penetration. As well as creating a sharper point.

Edge that includes flat and curved portions.

A neutral edge/guard presentation, promotes use in varied environments.

Ergonomic Handle includes finger and palm swells, as well as a guard and a pinky hook it also includes a forward cant to bring blade inline and increase shearing effect.

Middle size, not too large for the belt, but larger to tackle big jobs.

Full flat grind.

Wide blade put more mass behind the edge.

Good stuff, guys! I can't wait to see how this thread plays out. If I had a scanner I would join in, but I wouldn't want to be accused of trying to get something for nothing, so I'll just sit back and watch. I wonder what craziness Jim March will come up with? :P

I only have one design on my drawing board, it's a traditional style drop point hunter 4" blade, stag handle. I'm having this knife made right now, with a Damascus blade, with a Turquoise spacer, brass guard and butt cap. It might be interesting to mix a Hi-tech steel like Talonite with a Classic design, I don't see it as being a production piece however. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=254126&a=1889226&p=17152798&Sequence=0
My drawing is heavily influenced by Ed Fowlers "Pronghorn" and I freely admit it.
My guess is that anything submitted here is going to be a reflection of something that exists now.

thanks

Well, I got a couple of designs, so why not. Is it ok to enter several designs? Oh well, I'm gonna let you have two of them anyways
smile.gif

Here's the first, a combat/utility knife all measurements in metric I am afraid. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=219056&a=1631597&p=15630098&Sequence=0

And here for the second one, a smaller, more concealable fighter. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=219056&a=1631597&p=15630094&Sequence=0
The Combat Wasp is in the same scale as the Midnight Express if that's any help. Blade thickness of 3/16th of an inch. Handle scales of black linen Micarta or carbon fiber.Should be easily disassembled by end user to facilitate replacement of handle scales if damaged. Same goes for the Midnight Express.
That's what I got...Hope you like them

Here is my entry.

I'm very interested in the work of some of the earlier knifemakers, the guys who turned a cottage industry into big business. To me, these people were craftsmen who turned out the pieces of steel that were both stylish and useful on hunting trips or for everyday use.

I call my design the Harry Morseth Tribute and consider it a marriage of traditional knife style and modern materials - namely, a talonite blade and black micarta for the handle.

The spacers are red and white micarta and the buttcap and guard are brass. Accompanied with a traditional leather sheath would be the ultimate outdoorsman's blade, something that could be passed down to the next generation with pride.

Thanks for the opportunity,

Mike
