Just because you can carry ( a knife ) does that mean you should be oblivious?

Example: I am walking down the street minding my own business and it turns out a blade of a specific length is bad. ( this is theoretical mind you)

I am feeling entitled to carry whatever I want at this point, as long as I mind my business. I should be okay, right?

Is this the consensus amongst most of us here?

just so im clear,

someone is carrying a knife that is illegal, but they dont know it is. correct?

if so, not so much. ignorance of a law is not a valid excuse to break it. the onus is on the owner to be aware of laws pertaining to their item.

I personally try to make sure that I KNOW what the knife law is in the area that I am in. It is MY responsibility to find out what the law is. I agree with Morimotom.

yeah, I'm with the cougar on this, wut?

Here's my take, it's only illegal if you get caught, otherwise do as you want and accept the risk.

Spot on. You think "it can't happen to me", and are basically oblivious. Then what happens? You weren't intent on anything different from your normal routine to happen...but it can...and does. Every day.

I seriously doubt everyone on the forum knows exact blade length legalities as they vary from town to town, city to city and state to state.

yes, from a certain point of view i suppose.

but that could be applied to any criminal activity, regardless of severity.

really, some things are always illegal, but you only get punished if you get caught.

You can feel entitled to carry a gun because the second amendment exists, but it won't make doing so any less illegal if you are not permitted to do so.

Same goes for knives....if you want to carry one, you should know the laws. You may or may not get busted, but if you do, you can't blame the laws or the cop enforcing them if you carry something prohibited and get caught.

My take is to know the law intimately, comply with it in all respects, and then screw anyone who doesn't like it.

Thats easy for me to say, however, because in my jurisdiction I can lawfully carry - concealed or open - just about anything that has an edge or goes bang, so I'm generally not faced with the issue of whether to violate the law.

If I lived in a more restrictive jurisdiction, I can fathom situations in which the risk of being defenseless outweighed the risk of getting caught breaking the law. In other words, would you rather face (unarmed) an angry mob of juvenile thugs who want to do you harm, or while armed an angry cop who found you carrying illegally. I'll take the cop, please.

My stepfather got his license to drive when Moses was in short pants; that doesn't immunize him from knowing the speed limits today, just because they weren't on his license test back then.

There are a lot of laws that a cop may let you fly on, but I doubt being caught carrying a broadsword in public is gonna be one of them.

I know that I DO NOT know all the knife laws every where. BUT, being that I travel all over the country with my job, I do my BEST to find out what the knife laws where I am going. THAT is MY responsibility. I do my best. That is all.

TKC, therein lies part of the problem. No one knows, also what if the officer is having a bad day, a bad week.. a bad life???

Many different scenarios can play out.

I know in today's world we cannot be "entitled", yet many of us feel we are.

Look at NYC- liner locks are now gravity knives.

Look at Washington D.C. you can't own a gun in your home, in spite of what the 2nd amendment says. Got an intruder coming through your window at 3am? Too bad if he's not obeying the law and has a gun and you are obeying it and have none. The country that says you will not have your right to keep and bear arms infringed, has forbidden firearms totally in it's capital. Wonder what would happen if you took the same mindset as the crook and had a gun anyway, so you shoot him? The law is not very forgiving when it's subjects choose to transgress and the very reason you are transgressing happens to you. You'd probably get as much time as the intruder would if the police had apprehended him coming in your window.

Is it worth the risk of going to jail? So you can carry a 9" blade?

I have got better things to do with my time. Though I occassionally carry above the limit.

Most of us can look up the knife laws for their state but city, county gets a little gray. There are volumes of prohibative laws on the books and most are iggnorant of their existance . Life is not cut and dried and neither is the law .Many of these laws are reverse loop holes designed to create revinue.

I obey the law. However I honestly cannot fathom why knife laws even exist. I reside in a city where all the thugs carry guns. Where I'm from, no self respecting thug, especially the ones who enjoy rap music and speak in profanities would ever carry or use a knife as an instrument of crime. Well I do live on another planet.

1. Learn the laws of the state you live in, county and city if applicable.
2. Obey the laws if possible, sometimes it can be tough.
3. Determine if breaking the law is needed for your personal safety.

If you do decide that for your personal safety to carry outside of the law do not be surprised if you get busted when you flash your knife or gun around to prove how macho you are. Also don't be surprised if you get pulled over for speeding when carrying outside the law and are found out when asked to step out of your car and the item is in plain veiw. If you decide to carry outside of the law you need to be the most polite law abiding citizen that walks the face of the earth. You also need to carry with deep concealment in mind, stay out of bars, stay out of areas known for crime if possible, and back down from any confrontation as far as you can.

Do or have I ever carried outside the law? No one knows and I intend for it to stay that way.

I have found that it often comes down to the least common denominator factor. If the laws are loosened, some dumb-ass will go around carrying a bush machete because in his mind "he can." Officers are up against that and other things every day. What I carry is usually on a whim on any given day except at work. I have had to "show" my carry on a few occasions at accident scenes. When it is been illegal, I should be prepared to surrender it and face any consequences, and I am. After the job is done only twice has any officer asked about my knife. One rural situation and one urban. Both times I was treated fairly and on both occasions I got the "what kind of knife and how much" questions. To be fair one officer did remind me that autos are illegal. Unfortunately knife laws seem to be based on the worst possible situation and most idiotic potential carrier. I carry what I think I might need on any given day. I don't go into shopping malls and start flipping a bali-song around. Common sense is a great equalizer but often is only available in small quantities.
