I buy 36" brass or stainless rod at the local hdwr. store for pins. I pull it across a 220 grit belt, rotating it as I pull it across. Leaves beautiful circumferential grooves which really grip the epoxy. Then, cut the pins to length.

Be careful putting a wax or any other kind of resist on your scales... it works well, just be careful as to not get wax where you want the epoxy to actually stick!
Cleaning with only acetone is not going to make your scales pop off. I used acetone only for years, and had to take a few knives apart... they don't want to come apart. The alcohol will just make the bond even better. I did up a little full tang knife recently with buckeye burl scales. When I started shaping the scales, I found a void that went almost to the tang. :grumpy:
I cut the scales off (within ~1/16" of tang) with the bandsaw. Then I tried to chisel the rest off... I ended up GRINDING the rest off.
IME, the very best prep for epoxy is sand-blasting the surfaces.
