ESEE 5 Convex edge?

That was my question. It seemed like the guy in the video was grinding his knives (a esee and a becker) flat on the sandpaper.

I was wondering how he added the convex part of a convex edge using flat sandpaper.

Watch those videos on the link is posted. He does a really good job of explaining the angels.

What about expedient field edges with convexed knives? Anyone got any experience with that? Do you carry sand paper and MP/Leather with your knife in a kit? Do you use ferral rocks ('round here, we call them TN Sex Stones)?

I'm asking because I wish to know, not to stir up trouble. Thanks.

Moose

I use the inside of my leather belt out in the field

Of course one of the advantages of freehanding, even if intending a V, is that the variation of motion tends to give a slight convex to the edge. The better the freehand skill and technique, the less convex, but I would expect a little no matter what...nobody is a machine! Best of both worlds...easy touch ups...just a little bit more metal behind the edge than a perfectly geometric V.

Way back, I did something similar on a cheap survival knife and it did make it extremely sharp (I have some scars on my finger to prove it). I may try it on my Becker to see how it goes.

Allthough sandpaper over a mouse pad is the preffered way to maintain a convex edge, it's not the only way. Hell I use one of those folding DMT diamond thingys in the field.

+1 A convex edge is great, but you don't need any special equipment for one. It may make it easier to get it at first, but maintenance is nothing different from the ordinary.

So, after reading this, I am going to try and do a convex edge on a Becker knife I have, but I have one question. Do you NEED to strop afterwards for the knife to be really sharp (as the guy in the vids said), or is it more of "just to make it even sharper"?

You will have a very dull knife if you do not strop it. I would say you have to strop, but I could be way way off! I am not expert on the matter.

I always end up with a sharp knife after I am done convexing, but I was taught to strop, so I strop anyway. Not sure if anything would really happen if I didn't.

Yes, I strop every knife no matter the grind. It not only finishes the edge, but removes any burr that may still be there.

Good advice. I have to agree.

Man, that hurt to say.:D

Did you just agree with Tony?

Never thought I would see the day..

Yeah, I know, and I thought this year was going to be a good start. So far, I am questioning my sanity and judgement at the moment.

Oh wait, the suns going down, better sell all of my ESEE knives on the Xchange. Be right back.

I use my 5 exponentially more frequently now that I convexed the edge. Makes it more of a daily user. Go for it.

wow, this has been greatly informative!!!!!! I never knew any of this stuff.
thanks guys!!!!!!! cant wait to do this to my 5 thats in the mail!!!
hoora

would anyone post some pics of convexing the 5? I kinda have an idea of how to do it, but I wanted to see what it actually looks like on the 5. thanks

here is this quick link to convexing the 5.
I want to do this so badly, but I DONT want to take all that beautfiul and necessary coating off, just to regret it later on down the road for some reason!

happy medium? convexing it well while not taking whole wackload of coating off?

also ... sorry for posting three fricking times in a row:D

I saw that video and I would love to have the end result without all of the work...at least until I know that I can do it without ruining my knife. I will likely start with a few cheap chinese junk knives.
