I learned how to convex with sandpaper/mouse pad on bladeforums about 2 years ago and have done almost all my knives. Found that I loved how sharp I can get the edge and how easy it is to maintian. I recently saw the video of the gu convexing the ESEE 5 and really wanted to give it a try. Just finished and was pretty excited how easy (although somewhat time consuming) it was. Only difference is I just got a Kalamazoo 1x42 for Christmas so used that to do the edge. Went thru progression of 240 grit to 400 grit to 800 grit over mouse pad to remove coating. Will likely hit with 1000 grit but was out. BTW, really loving the 1x42. Very quick and easy to put a wicked convex on a knife. Loved how quick and sharp it put a convex edge on my ASH-1 Skinny.
