ESEE 5 or the BK2

Be advised that the BK2 sheath shown in that video is not the sheath that now ship's with the BK2.

This is the one you will get. I took the detachable belt loop off and have been using para cord to attach it to my belt. The new sheath works with a large Tec-lok which I have yet to order .
Also, the retention on the new sheath is top notch.

thanks again everyone. I am going with the bk2. frontline, where did you buy yours? I really like the new sheath compared to the old one.

I got mine from a guy on the forum. But Tomar's is a great reliable dealer to order from. You wont regret this purchase.;)

Edited to add: Tomar's has the second generation BK 2, with the new sheath.

Hey Frontline, i thought the newer BK2 had the exposed tang sticking past the end of the handle.
Yours doesn't seem to have that feature...am i wrong about that?
Thanks.

I would say get the ESEE 5. After the handle and sheath upgrade, the price difference between the BK2 and ESEE 5 is non existent. The ESEE has a better fit and finish, better warranty, and in my opinion, it looks waaaaayy better.

The new BK2's do ship with the new sheath. I just have an older version knife in those pictures.;)

You don't have to upgrade the sheath for the BK2. All new BK2'S ship with the new sheath.

After you upgrade to micarta scale's on the BK2, (That's if you want to) it would still be around 50$ cheaper then the ESEE 5.

You can buy both the knife and the micarta handle scales for like 95$.

The ESEE comes in around 150$ right?

As for the Karbar warranty.
As long as you don't purposely abuse the knife, Kabar will look after you.

I've seen them go for $135, and from what I've heard, the sheaths that the BK2s come with aren't great. Most people that I've read about buy new sheaths for their BK2s, and a nice sheath goes for around $50. So about $60 for the knife (from what I've seen), $50 for an ESEE comparable(ish) sheath, and about $30(?) for the micarta handles... that comes out to be around $140. And with those modifications, from my understanding, the Bk2 would be comparable with the ESEE 5 in most regards. Minus the warranty, which I still think has to go to the ESEE. That is the conclusion that I have come to... however, I don't have any hands on experience with either of those knives. I have had great experience with ESEE's products though.
My .02

Having said all that, if you're content with the sheath (Again, haven't seen them) and the grips on the BK2 suffice, then there may be no need to spend the extra money.
But I think I would still go with the 5.. I'm just a fan I suppose

ooh damn. Next time I'll read everyone's posts, I see you've made your decision.. Honestly though, either knife is going to be bombproof. a .25 inch o' steel is going to take a beating. I'm sure you'll be content with you choice. You'll have to let us know what you think!

This I can agree with you on.;)

Aight, read all the posts (can't blame me for not reading all of them before, I'm supposed to be doing homework..)
So the BK2 has a newly designed sheath?

Tough call. Both have excellent blade steels and heat treat, both have a very good company behind them who will take care of their customers, and both (BK2 and RC5) are pretty indestructible. However, the RC5 probably has a better sheath. But for the price, I went with the Becker.

alright, so shoot me- i have been spending most of my free time looking at both the bk2 and the rc-5. i have watched tons of reviews, read a lot of forum posts...

my question is, is if both knives were to have the micarta handles, and both knives cost the same- which knife would be better in the end?

i know that esee has the better warranty, and i also like the look of the overall knife more so than that of the bk2. but the bk2 looks to be more beefy on the top of the knife whereas the 5 looks to taper more towards the front of the blade. is this something to be concerned over?

whos handle is actually more comfortable? i know you guys have given tons of input on the forums, but can i bother you for more?

any more help is greatly appreciated.

^From what i've seen and heard, the RC-5's handle is kinda boxy...as in flat, whereas the BK-2's is more ergonomic with it's palm rise, and fits better in the hand...especially if you have bigger hands.
But the 5 is also more slim, so it's not as bulky for carry.

I myself chose the BK-2.

You're going to hate this answer, because I know you're looking for something more definitive, but you just have to get your hands on both and see which one feels better to you. That's not a cop-out, it's just that you're talking about two great knives that are so similar that little things — like how it feels — may be what tips the balance for you.

Personally, I like the BK-2. The handle is the most comfortable of any that I've ever used, and fits my hand perfectly, but my hands are not your hands.

One reason all things the same, is that ESEE has the "no questions" lifetime warranty. KA BAR has been pretty good about taking care of customers who have done justifiable damage to their blades, but I dont know for 100% sure they'd replace it if you told them you broke it by trowing it at concrete.

But wait.. we're talking about the BK2 or RC5.. they aren't going to break.

I'm glad I went with the BK2 over the RC5, mostly for the price, but also because After I felt an RC5, i thought it was too blocky of a handle to me.
