ESEE 5 or the BK2

If I remember correctly, the ESEE 5 is 16 ounces and the BK2 is 14 ounces. From the specs, the 5 seems a little beefier.

You're pretty close — ESEE 5: 16, BK2: 14.6 ounces.

As to which one is beefier? I wouldn't want to have to live or die on the difference — they're both pretty darn tough knives.

ETA: The weight in both blades is probably pretty close. The new gen BK-2 now has some cut-outs in the tang to save weight, and the Grivory handles are hollow and weigh less than the solid micarta grips. My first gen BK-2 weighs an even 16 ounces.

dawsonbob makes a great point about personal preference. You should never buy something just because someone else says its the best or somebody says they dont like it. I have some ESEE stuff and some Becker stuff, I chose the BK2 over the 5...Pesonal preference. Do I want to be on the business end of either, NO...Personal preference. Neither one costs an arm and a leg, new or used. So buy one and use it for a while then get the other one. Sell the one you like the least here on the forum. I would be confident with either knife in almost any situation. I know you have already made your decision but I could'nt resist commenting on the subject.

I'm not good at decisions, had to get both.

Well, that's always a good option, to get both. Both are excellent knives. I do think the F&F is better on the ESEE knife, but I don't think the blade steel is going to be any better. As someone else said, you can get micarta scales for the Becker & still probably have some $ left.

As good as the ESEE & Ka-Bar Beckers are, I prefer the Camillus made ones. I have a BK3 Tac-Tool & BK10 Crewman. Excellent knives.

Both are great knives, I would get either one and never look back. No doubt that the F&F is better on the ESEE knives, but they are a little more expensive for a reason. Both companies have great knives and service  !!!

I took a chance on the RC-5 before they ran out of the original sheaths, just over a year ago - ~$125 + s/h then. Bargain, even if I don't know what to do with the sheath... I like leather better. I have used the sheath around the back yard cleaning up brush, etc - it may go on a camping trip yet. The RC-5 feels good in the hand and balances well, the 'tooth' on the handle being enough for decent retention when sweaty. Of course, there is that firebow dimple...

It is a poor man's Busse, though I wouldn't attempt to gut a Studebaker - or filet a fleetliner - with it. It will do anything I need a rugged knife to do - up to the use of my old Plumb camp hatchet. I did a lot of my camping with a SAK or Buck 110 - and a KaBar - so it will likely be an improvement.

PS Anyone try a firebow with that dimple?
