Esee AH-1 Goes Down Range

Mike, dental floss or braided fishing line would be better for balance without losing significant strength.

pitch glue is pretty simple if you have the ingredients and something to melt it in - it's just melted pine pitch with some wood ash and a pinch of ground calcium carbonate (catalyst - helps it set better rather than stay sticky) which comes from sea shell, snail shell, or egg shell. (ground limestone also works, but not as well as the organic sources)
In addition to using it as a glue, it can be used to seal a container for carrying water.

Wanderlust - duct tape makes OK fletching, but it's not fery durable and bends too easy for repeat shots. OTOH, you can use cut up water/soda bottle, as it's generally easy to find a discard and it's more durable.

he did WELL Don.....WELL...not "good". But indeed Decklin you did very well. I am sold on your thinking process and drive. To both Decklin and Don and Cricket, would it be better to use a thin wire or dental floss instead of the bulky paracord? Not nit picking, rather just wondering if the more weight and bulk at the front end would cause the arrow to drop more at the front thus the arrow hitting the target at an angle? Mike

Appreciate the tip Mike! I'll give this a try. I was reading more on crafting arrows. Put together with the info everyone has pitched in here. I think I might try it a few different ways and see a side by side comparison. I started to wrap the AH-1 with the 50# Spider Wire, but it kept sliding around on me. I think if I use that or dental floss and slide the arrowhead in a notch as Dave explained, I'll be in good shap.

Thanks again for the info.

You can also use sinew for string. It is much stronger and sticks togeather after a while, causing the bonds to increase. Three Rivers Archery currently has some on sale. :)

yeah some wire or that kevlar line would work really good, i just used the inside thread from para cord because thats what i had in my psk on my 5 and i was doin it quick and slopy. good heavy fish line would work well too, i got the idea for the notch from shotgunner, thats the way he mounted a arrowhead on a stick for a snake gig.

take it easy

I think thin wire would be a little too strong, if not weak in a few spots. and dental floss would not be nearly strong enough; unless perhaps you were able to braid it into a good string.

Looks like its been a fun little project.

I'll have to pick up an arrow head or two with my next ESEE purchase. Hopefully that will be tomorrow! :D

Very neat project. You had more accuracy than I'd have thought with a homemade bow and arrow.

I have NO experience hunting animals bigger than lizards/snakes with a bow. Thinking back to my entry for the survival camping contest, where I discovered there were pigs around - do you think your arrow had enough force to kill an adult pig from 25 feet? I know they are pretty tough (but can be killed with a Junglas if you are fast enough to catch up the them :D).

I have a couple of AH1 arrowheads, but I didn't think to take them for my trip. Wondering whether it would be better to try making a bow/arrow, or rigging some sort of trap with the arrowhead as a deadly tip on a deadfall or something, in order to kill something as large as a wild pig?

I always laugh when Mike tries to give English lessons to someone. One of these days I'm going to secretly record him and post it up. He flat murders the English language in every day conversation, as do I. Point is, we get our point across.

Rodloos I wouldn't try to use the arrow head for a pig. I mean a bow and arrow that is capable of 300fps or better yea. I have shot hogs with a 270 left bone and blood and still ran 80yds. I'm not a tree hugger but I believe an animal should die quickly even if it is a pest. I would like to use the arrow for a fishing spear..... There is a local lake that has a destructive species I will look into this. Thanks for posting and getting the brain moving.

Great post! Makes me want to go out and give it a try too. . . .

Of course, it's sub-freezing temps here, so I may wait until it warms up a bit.

here are some of the ways ive rigged up the AH-1 for arrow/spear/gig use.

30lb test fishing line...my personal fav

willow bark cordage. It was actually quite strong.

I should have built this one like the first two i posted, but i was more interested in the retention of the arrowhead with the small spruce roots.

The AH-1 is one of my fav pieces of kit..so many uses, so little time :)

Very cool! I've been trying to think of educational projects to do with the kids while camping. This is perfect and I'll add it to the list. I'll order a few arrowheads soon.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip thats what I was thinking.

Get some good PowerPro/sufix fishing line, its some tuff stuff.

The only thing thats ever broke this line was a giant muskie.

I don't own any AH-1's but I will have to pick up some soon...

actually, i'd recommend specialty kite line, made of spectra. it's stronger than strong, THIN, supple, comes on giant spools for good value. about the only thing commonly stronger is kevlar line. amazing stuff.

You were thinking the same thing I was. I think everyone has a pretty good idea how to attach the arrow head one way or another. But if you can't get a little drag on the arrow, it will all be for not past 20 yards. I really wanted to use feathers, but could not find any, and I suspect this may also take some time finding in the woods. Of course you'll come across a whole pile of them when you are not needing them. I also thought about using duct tape but opted to try a leaf out, sticking with a natural material. Honestly I think I would likely end up using duct tape for fletching if I could not find feathers. This is why I am adding some arrow fletching to my PSK. Enough for 2-3 arrows doesnt weigh much or take up hardly any room, but could prove to be quite handy.

WOW great thread!! thanks for posting! I was thinking of doing this myself, you totally got me excited about it! I will now make the time to build my own after seeing your success! Also all the great pointers posted by everyone is going to help alot!

Great to see such support from jeff as well! thats just one of the many things that makes this company so great!
