ESEE Glassbreaker Attachment Idea [EDIT: Now With Prototype]

I meant for storage purposes if you didn't want it on the knife all the time. Totally agree with you.

Ah, then yeah, that would be cool.

On a side note, for pommel attachment, a ball detent setup (think slip on socket wrench) would be neat, but I imagine a pain the ass to manufacture and would thicken the whole deal.

Yeah, have you ever built an AR-15 rifle? setting it up like the front pivot pin's spring and detent would just be some extra milling/drilling, but then the pin never goes missing and I suspect it would even "hook up" to some standard 1/4" kydex rivets.

I have not and I completely missed that part of your post, bro. :foot:

A possible mounting option would be to make a metal tab shaped like the pommel of the knife that could be bolted to the sheath. Then you just attach the glass breaker to that tab the same way you would to the knife. Keeps it handy and out of the way, and will just use one bolt hole on the sheath.

Attachment could be as easy as a push ring pin.

The kind that have the spring ball on the end of the pin. The ring and pin could easily be attached to a key ring via 550.

Lot of posts here...so I didn't read them all.

I have a 3 with the pointed pommel as well as a 3MIL with the actual facets coming to a point. I filed my 3 to have the glass breaker point and I am happy. Quite frankly, I hope never to have to use it and I don't expect I'll bother to practice either but I have two 3s with pointed pommels and my 5 with the really big, full-fledged glass/plexiglass breaker.

While we are on the subject of attachments for the pommel, what about a pry bar attachment like the back of the HEST? I'm not sure if there is enough exposure on the pommel for the pry bar attachment to bite into but with the right 'cup' it might work? I think it would be great to turn our 3,4,5,6 into a prybar...

Read some post.....
1. Cool idea
2. Doesn't need to contact micarta
3. Simple bolt mount that bottoms out before it goes through the other end.
4. One word........ Tungsten Carbide
Ok that's two words.... but it breaks windows like nobodies business. Just a small diamond size "beak" like on the Vortex brakes:

if you are wanting a slip on attachment over the pommel but still have the ability to put it on/ take it off easily, why not try this.

use oversized rounded "washers" that looks like ritz crackers. maybe the thickness of 2 or 3, but have the slight indentions on the side like the crackers. One male one female. Use that instead of a torx bolt or any other normal bolt.

-You can easily tighten it with your fingers or turning your palms opposite of each other, to meet the requirements of fast on fast off.

-It provides secure attachment with the ability to get a better grip and create more torque when tightening.

-Depending on how large your hands on on a 4's grip, the larger "washers" can deflect and even protect the hand "in theory"

The only down side to oversized "washers" is that is it not as fluid in the lines of the knife

I do also really like the idea of a longer term solution of have the attachment being able to slide over the the end of the knife below the micarta and attach with the 2 holes already in place. i know i would enjoy thicker handles as i wear XL gloves

Something like this?

Awesome idea. If this comes to fruition I could see the attachment with some cool design on it, para-cord or leather cord running through the lanyard hole, and worn around the neck. ESSE swag. Then when needed it could be easily take off and attached to knife. Lanyard and breaker all in one and always together ready to go.

Some excellent ideas and designs.

We've got CNC lathes itching to make chips!

OH, I would love to turn some gear.
The lathe is my machine of love.

I've only ran a hass and mori seiki, I loved the mori.....

Yeah, I don't know that I'd solely trust the micarta for prying...It's strong stuff but I've never torture tested it like some here have.

But the concept itself is definitely interesting!

That's a pretty excellent design, why the hell didn't I think of that? Simplicity is the sign of a good inventor.
