ESEE Glassbreaker Attachment Idea [EDIT: Now With Prototype]

While we are on the subject of attachments for the pommel, what about a pry bar attachment like the back of the HEST? I'm not sure if there is enough exposure on the pommel for the pry bar attachment to bite into but with the right 'cup' it might work? I think it would be great to turn our 3,4,5,6 into a prybar...

Pry bar attachments don't last. I'm a vol. firefighter and there are several companies that make halligan bars that have detachable heads.

For anyone who doesn't know what one looks like.

They can do some serious prying with either end. The ends that are not permanently connected to the body always end up breaking off from the pressures of prying crap open. Paneling on cars, door jams, walls, ceilings, and whatever else.

Also a few other smaller pry bars that have detachable ends. I have snapped the ends off two small pry bars, and the end off one full size halligan.

I think we have one full size halligan that uses detachable ends left that has not been broken. The rest have been replaced with 1 piece tools. :o

My thinking is making this so it can be slipped on quickly for emergency use.

What about using a solid pin with a hole in the head end with a split ring in it and a spring-loaded ball bearing in the other end to create retention after insertion? If memory serves correctly similar pins exist but I'll be damned if I can remember what they're called. :p

I've just always called them a ball lock pin... but I have heard them called other names by other people.

Exactly how the heads of some halligan bars are attached. They snap in half with hard use. Which for a glass breaker type attachment wouldn't be an issue, but it certainly would for any sort of pry bar attachment.

At least the pin is what would break and not the tool! :p I'm pretty sure it would last well if stuck on the end of a knife, though. The shorter length means you're using it for far less strenuous tasks than a halligan bar.

A quick release pin, sounds like a clevis style quick release pin would be about perfect. Like this guy:

That's exactly what I was thinking of! Just couldn't remember what it was called. :p

I think something along the lines of what 42blades post would be best with the ball bearing. It'd be the easiest to use and remove. If you use a cotter pin then you'd have extra pieces which are a real pain.

To the OP, is this some thing you're going to patent? it's a great idea and something that could be used by other companies

Yeah man this could be a big thing in the knife world and be ripped off bad I bet SOG is already working on there own version

Obviously the pin design isn't the most important part of this, but this type would work great too. All of the force of using the breaker is going to be exerted directly onto the spine of the knife, and the pin just needs to hold it in place. Also, you'll have to be sure not to put much pressure on the scales so they don't get ruined. A quick release pin like this would be super easy to lose, and easy to keep track of since it's all one piece.
