The reasons I like to keep the weight of my wood chopping knives as low as possible, without sacrificing performance or quality, is that I pack in my own tools on wilderness trips and want to keep the weight and bulk to a minimum. If I used a vehicle to carry my tools for me then this wouldn't be a concern. The other thing is that when chopping for an extended period of time even a few ounces less weight can save some calories. This is especially important if an emergency or survival situation should arise, where calorie expenditure can mean the difference between life and death.
As to your question, the knives I referred to are a Busse Basic 10, Swamp Rat Battle Rat, and Ontario Gen II SP50 (unfortunately all these fine knives have been discontinued). I am very impressed how such high performance and quality can be attained with such low weight, but have no idea how the manufacturers do it. It doesn't seem possible to me, either, which is why I double-checked the weight of all the knives on a food scale after refreshing my memory with some online research.
