The Sencillo.. is it worth waiting for the Magnacut version, or will A2 «suffice». Do I need diamonds etc to sharpen a MC blade, or will the original edge pro stones and a sharpmaker do?

I knocked the paint off the edge of this beauty with 220 and 320 grit sandpaper. I didn't do the whole blade because I like the bright color! Just thinned out behind the edge, so it cuts more efficiently.

I sharpened it to about 20 degrees per side with an old hard Arkansas stone and plenty of water. That worked great. I stropped it with Harald-Solingen red crayon on leather, and it would pop hair and cut cigarette paper.

Then I stabbed it into a mature palm tree, as deep as I could, with the grain of the tree. Then I violently twisted the blade 90 degrees on its axis, applying pure lateral pressure to the edge. Then I levered it back and forth like a madman, cutting the tree across the grain. An observer would have thought I was deliberately trying to destroy the blade!

I actually cut down an angry, sizable palm tree with that modest 4" blade. I also used the knife to cut roots out of the rocky soil, using similarly abusive technique. 1095 clanking on rocks! I was out of control!

It survived with very minimal damage, just a few very minor chips that were easily sharpened out. It was dull as cheese after that torture test, but it performed! It sharpened up easily afterwards.

If I had my choice I would always lean toward the S35N version. The 1095 gives up its edge way too easily for my purposes.

That is a great way to spend time outside. Do you carry your kindling with you from home? I don't drink hot drinks but you kinda make me want to go out and boil water for no reason 🤣😂.

Thanks. Today I brought my kindling from home. Just splitting the final parts and make some curls on the spot. Depends a bit on how much time I have to spend on my coffee ... and the weather.:p

With the Kelly kettle you can store enough kindling in the kettle's chimney to get your water to boil and the some...

I did some research on your kettle when I first saw it, It's a great design. You make good use of yours. Keep posting pictures of it with your ESEE's mate. I'll find an excuse to buy it one day😂🤣.

My $.02…

I really like A2 steel, in fact, it is one of my favorites for an outdoor knife. I have not used ESEE’s A2 (White River in this case) but I trust them and have never been disappointed in anything of theirs. They don’t release stuff that hasn’t been field tested and that’s one of the reasons I love their stuff. And I have loads of ESEE knives.

I have never used Magnacut and I don’t have any plans of picking up anything in this steel. I’m sure it’s probably a great steel and I imagine that ESEE would do a great job with it. I just don’t have any need or desire for it. A2 would be all I would ever want or need, honestly 1095 is all I really need.

Only you know if Magnacut is something you want/need and is worth waiting for and, I’m assuming, at a higher price point. If you need the extra stainless qualities or whatever else Magnacut offers then I would wait. But, if you don’t care about that A2 is a fine choice.

Stainless is nice, but it’s ease of sharpening and toughness I’m most interested in. When I say toughness, I’m thinking of resistance to chipping with a thin blade and low angle

I have an LT Wright knife in A2 tool steel that I sharpened to a 24 degree angle (12 degrees per side) and have never chipped it and only had one minor edge roll, which was my fault. Hopefully that gives you an idea of the toughness
