ESEE (RAT Cutlery) RC-4 terrible handles

I find the handles on the RC knives comfortable. I do know some folks that slip a section of bicycle inner tube over the handle though, to make them more comfortable to them.

I second the notion of spacer if you do not like the Factory specs on the Scales. may I offer you to post in the RAT/ESEE forum on your next insight on ESEE knives you'll get a faster response and maybe from the makers & owners

BaldTaco...thanks for the plug..but I've gotten some feedback from Rat Packers saying that since I do away with the screws when I rehandle, it's not a ESEE anymore....
I guess I understand...or not......Anyway, for them I say go the liner/spacer route. That way they can keep the screws.

Did you see my Used To Be ESEE 3?

Lamont Coombs rehandled my BK2. Black canvas micarta he also used pins instead of screws, beadblasted the black coating off and milled some thumb serations in. All for a very reasonable cost.

Lamont does some fantastic work, doesn't he? We usually keep a few of his pieces in the shop. I wish I could convince the man to wear a respirator while he works though!

Just make sure your new scales go on with the ESEE torx screws, then you can swap scales when you want to.
are you thinking of more palm swell or overall?

Brad, I beileve was thinking of a bit more palm swell.

Rayban - I don't know which RP'ers gave you flak over that ESEE3, but I think you did a great job on it.

Rayban, hey

No problem. I was hoping you might see this and chime in. I'd seen some of your work but I was only guessing that you may be interested in taking a commission on doing one – phone him and find out kinda thing. Cool.

I'm a firmly lodged in synthetics and stainless kinda person but what you've done with that Used To Be ESEE 3 looks good to me. Nah, not seen that before. :-)

Tony, you're right, I completely forgot about posting in the RAT/ESEE forum.
What really bothers me about this is that Mike Perrin has done me a whole bunch of favors when Ontario screwed up a bunch of RAT knives that I had gotten from them. I must apologize to the fellas at ESEE.

First let me say THANK YOU to all of you for taking the time to post here with your advice. It's amazing how generous everyone in this forum is, in sharing their knowledge and experience. Once again, Thank you all.

Now that a lot of you have convinced me to give the RC-4 some field time, I'm going to use it for various tasks for an extended period of time. But, I'm also going to buy another RC-4 (you guys know how it goes, when you can't decide buy two) and have new handles made for this one. I want to see what it will feel like with different handles. I'm also going to probably have the coating stripped off it before having it "rehandled". I'm going to contact some of the people mentioned in the posts and work with them to see what we can come up with.

Thank you all !!!

Tony

"1066vik" that is a great idea about making some plastic shims or spacers and using them to come up with the proper thickness before having the handles made. Thanks.

"hollowdweller", great insight and explanation about the geometry of knife handles and how one should consider handle depth in relation to handle width. Also, the pictures really help in "illustrating" your point (no pun intended). Thanks.

The RC-4 is pretty when its shiny. Might as well convex that sucker while you are at it :D :D

Thai is really pretty. On the one that I'm going to have rehandled I will definitley have the coating removed and then polish it like yours. Maybe even have the edge convexed.
