Photos Estwing

I work as an archaeology tech, doing the labor-type stuff for Cultural Resource Management. Here's my Estwing gear: a masonry hammer, their Geo/Paleo pick, and one of their rock hammer/picks. I have to say the larger blue Geo/Paleo pick is a wonderful, medium size and the long thin pick tine breaks up compact soils and hard pan really well.

COOL TOOL.....๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘.......Ever find a dinosaur????๐Ÿ˜‰

It has its moments for sure! I wasn't built for office work, I'm too lazy for construction, not super interested in math, so this is a good fit for me to work outside and have an excuse to get all the cool gear I like.
Do you read. Much??? Clan of the cave bear and the rest of the earth's children series is pretty damn cool......
Set.30,000 years ago fiction based on REAL facts........Neanderthals and Cro-magnon flora and fauna.....Its cool...๐Ÿ‘Œ

I read that one years ago! I work mostly on the west coast so it would be surprising to find Neanderthals there but lots of Native American stuff and we occasionally run into mega fauna fossils.

I'm not a fan of the tomahawk personally. The barbed nature of the pick is a weird choice and the cutout in the bit makes it overall more of a combat 'hawk and less of a breaching one. I hope they come out with a better-designed one at some point 'cause they're well positioned for it; it just needs to be a better optimized and classic/timeless design language.

New arrival - Estwing 24A Sportsman's Axe
I didn't have one quite like this yet. And it didn't break the bank to acquire.

No nail nick & thin steel end cap. Note decorative black and white discs on butt end of handle only. I find that interesting.

I believe this to be the driest leather handle I've received to date.

A quick sanding with 60 grit to remove the laquer residue patches and right down to trying to revive those leather discs with Neatsfoot Oil. I'm really hoping it's not too late.
I'll see if I can get the leather to swell a bit before I continue with sanding. Most of the discs are actually loose on the steel core at this point in time.
I suppose it's a good thing I stopped at the boot-shoe-leather shop for a fresh bottle of oil this past week.

Followed up this morning again with a bit of hand sanding and another generous application of oil. Let that set until evening and repeat twice a day.
That's my plan of attack at this point anyway.
Yes, I could just strip the leather off and re-stack with new, but I like a challenge. And there is something about keeping a tool in near original condition that appeals to me.
Be well. Be safe. Stay sharp.

Looks like a nice little project, youโ€™ll have it looking great in no time. Iโ€™m anxious to see the end result.

Has anyone here ever done a deep dive into Estwing history?

I'm finding some tidbits on early history that differs from what Estwing is showing on their web site. Here is an ad from December of 1925, showing Estwing leather handles being offered. Estwing's web site states that they began to offer leather in the 1930's. Ref: (History - Estwing - Celebrating 100 years - A look back with an eye to the future) on their site. I'm now communicating with Estwing to learn more about their company history.

Log-Off...

I finally finished up what I call the Widow's Axe, the Estwing 24A gifted to me by the widow down the street. Found in a local store parking lot and tossed into the back of her Jeep before passing it on to me, it now has been refreshed.

This one seemed to have led a hard life, but it has been a fun project.

As received.

A trip to the riverbank for some photos seemed in order upon completion of this clean-up project.

I had a new (quite possibly a second) Estwing sheath I had gotten a while back and treated with Neatsfoot Oil and topped with a couple of applications of BlackRock.

It looks to be possibly period-correct for this axe, but turned out with a bit of a reddish tint. I do think it works well with the way the handle came out.
No Neatsfoot Oil on the handle, simply two applications of BlackRock and a solid shoe-brushing when dry.

Not my idea of proper mushrooming.
