Ok, our first Beckerhead Contest, here we go:

Open to all Beckerheads Gold, Basic, or Registered. Moderators are excluded from the contest. The contest will run from December 1 through December 31. If you are not a Beckerhead currently, don't worry, if you become a Beckerhead bewteen Dec 1 and Dec 31, you can still participate.

The Challenge:
Using ONLY Becker products, you must construct a bow drill kit. The kit will consist of a hearth board, spindle, bearing block, and bow. No prebuilt or special bearing blocks, you must make a new one to go with the kit. You can use natural or synthetic cordage (paracord) to use with your bow. The kits must function, i.e, you must make a fire with the bow drill kit. The kits can be decorated or modded to increase your chances for a win. "They score extra points for dressing them up"-Ethan Becker. The more elaborate the better, but they must function. Imagination time, boys and girls.

The Verification:
You must post pictures or videos of the project from start to finish, with your fire being the last pic or at the end of the video. No verification will result in your entry being disqualified for judgement. No more than 10 pictures and videos no longer than 6 minutes, but you must have enough in the pictures to show your work on the Challenge, and enough coverage in the videos to show your work on the Challenge.

The Prizes:
1st place- A Becker BK9 with Micarta handles. The handles and box will be signed by Ethan Becker

2nd place- A Becker BK14 ESKabar. The box will be signed by Ethan Becker

3rd place- A Becker BK13 Remora. The box/package will be signed by Ethan Becker

To Enter in the Challenge:
Post your Beckerhead number in THIS THREAD, along with "I Take The Challenge", and you're in. Ethan will be judging the entries, and a winner will be announced AFTER the closing day of the Challenge. When is not certain. When the winners are chosen, they will be posted in the entry thread.

The Fine Print:
By entering into this Challenge, you assume all liability for your actions. Don't hurt yourself, others, or any property.

Suggestions:
Feel free to ask questions, share knowledge, post pics, post vids about this Challenge. I ask that you do it here, and not somewhere else. That is not a rule, just a request from me, Moosez45.

Make a few practice kits first, before tackling your entry. Check out some cool detail work, tribal patterns, football teams, logos, pictures, animals, whatever you want to use. Remember these will be judged on FORM and FUNCTION, make'em look cool.

POST YOUR ENTRIES IN THIS POST ONCE THEY ARE COMPLETED AND READY TO BE ENTERED. Feel free to share as much as you want, I hope this generates some good discussions, but keep your entry secret, until the time of the judging.;)

If you have never made a bow drill kit, there is a ton of info on the web, but I will be doing a tutorial and posting it here, along with info on wood types (HINT: Ethan REALLY likes PawPaw) that work well. This is a chance for you, and us to grow in our experiences.

Questions about this contest, should be kept in this thread. If you have questions, post them up. Try not to be too hard on me, this is my first "official" contest.:D:thumbup:

Above all else, have some fun. That's the point of all of this.

Good luck to you all.

Cool. #009 and I'm on it, or *ahem* "I take the challenge."

I've been wanting to make a primitive fire kit for a while anyway.

ETA: I may "GO BIG" like this guy did... :D

Rule Check:

Is it considered cheating if you blow on your coal with bourbon breath? :D

#11. I Take The Challenge... Although I've never made a bow drill kit. How hard could it be?

See that? That's winner talk, right there.

I take the challenge! (hrmph! hrmph!)

Not sure about a bow drill kit but I'm pretty good at making a smoky blister kit. I've done it before and will do it again! Thanks for the contest guys!

i have a fire kit. they're never intended to be pretty ;) as the most important parts gets worn out, the handle is field replaceable, and the cordage is special and kept dry. mmm, i suppose the bearing could be made "permanent" and super pretty, a compulsive type might scrimshaw things ;) course, i can't play. but i can heckle ;>

I'm still waiting for the online tutorial and my Bear Grylls motivational DVD.

Working on it, should have something up by tomorrow. Moose

I'm just messing with you. I have read a bunch of sites on fire kits. Sounds like downed cedar might be my best bet locally. Don't know if I can find white, but I'm bound to find some good red cedar.

I've got some juniper (an evergreen similar to cedar) logs out back from a tree I removed from our yard. I'm half tempted to split one open and try it too. It's mentioned here as one of the popular woods: http://www.wildernesscollege.com/bow-and-drill.html I know it'll be nice and dry.

I was taught to use two different types of wood, when making a bow and drill set. Is it a harder wood for the drill and a softer wood for the board or the other way around? Hint Hint. Makes a big difference if you do it right. I'm hoping to get some woods time today, and will get out tomorrow if I fail to get there today. It's my bro's birthday, SGT Mike of Denver PD. :D

that's what I thought and have tried to no avail, but again what do I know?? I've never had success with it yet. Of course I only tried a couple times got tired out adn just used my steel:D

Thanks Moose, you obviously got coal. I will try this with (one) type of wood and see what happens..

btw, do we post our entries here?
