Post in this thread. I was going to open another one, but there is no need, since Bladite stickied this guy, we can keep them all here together.

perhaps edit the first post as well for first timers starting there too, and any other random details, qualifiers, restrictions - one easily found set of rules to guide them all :>

Well I plan on partaking in this challenge, I'm not a Beckerhead yet, for some reason... I think I meet the requirements but I'm not sure.

You are, but Bladite and I decided we will issue numbers once a week and change the list once a week, but you're in, I'll PM you your BH# shortly.

Anyone start their bow kits yet. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? I've been busy finishing up some walking sticks for X-mas. Almost done with those. . Thinking Sunday I'll get it started.

I think some folks maybe holding thiers back, until its time to turn them in, but come Monday, everyone will need to start getting theirs turned in. We will have a little time after the Christmas weekend, but come Jan. 1, we start a new challenge, for new gear.

I'm going to try to finish mine up today. This was a very busy month, and I did not have a chance to spend the kind of time on it I wanted to. :D I will get it up reguardless.

This is the last week of the Challenge, everyone needs to have their entry in this week, time to start posting the pics and stuff. Good luck, lets go.

Round 1 with completed fire kit this morning...

British-Fail.jpg

But I made some important adjustments and learned some key techniques. In my mind, that's the whole point of these challenges anyway. The prizes are nice incentives, but I mainly like the learning curve.

I finally got some good smoke, but by the time I got my kit in order, my right arm was so tired from pushing the (second) bow that I never got it up to that next level of coal. Taking a break right now. Will push it again later, hopefully to the point of getting some fire going. Got plenty of good pics of the process so far.

Ok, I give you the props on the photo, it was good. Are you really pushing so much it wears your arm out? I'm not baggin' on you in anyway, I am just asking. From burn in/notch, I spin for maybe, 35-45secs max, and I gots coal, so, I am just wanting to help out with some suggestions. If you don't want any, just post another one of those FAIL pics:D

No, I got tired from so many attempts. Finally figured out that I had three issues: (1) too big of a bow, and (2) a slight curve at the top of my spindle, and (2) not enough "tit" on the spindle (too much friction at the top). I'd spin for a while, get a little smoke, and then everything would fall apart. Chopped off the curve, put more tit on the spindle, and went to a smaller bow. Got some good smoke pretty quick after that. Wife hollered for dinner though, and I said screw it, break time.

Got mine rolling, the worst thing was the weather.
(I HATE WINTER)
I had a hell of a time finding anything dry.......

this is one of the reasons bow/drill has never appealed to me I guess, I've tried in the past and failed and really didn't care to try again.. Until now, for the first time ever I'm gonna get a fire outta this thing if it kills me trying.. I guess I'm just a pansy for modern technology like a fire steel:D

Gonna try and get out in the morning if the little guy is up too it. The wife works during the day and he's been sick so no outdoors fun for me this past week.

I GOT COAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOHOO !!!!! first time ever and man what a feeling to have that coal burning in your tinder while you nurture it to life!!

I've tried many times with same technique to no avail. the problem was within the kit itself.. I was using my old bow for testing, kept getting smoke but that was it.. After many frustrating attempts I tried the new bow I made and wahlah... COAL !!! in about 25seconds..

I had removed the 7inners of the paracord on my old bow, DON'T do this.. leave the paracord alone, or simply use rope.. I really think this was the problem all along, it was slipping..

If you're not able to get coal in about 30seconds STOP and check your system for errors, or end up totally frustrated for months because I simply could never get coal..

Hope this helps..
