^^^^I am glad you spelled that out Peter

I recently had my first less-than-smooth transation on the exchange, with a seller who had all positive feedback marks

Day 1 - I indicate my offer to purchase said knife and promptly (within minutes) send funds. Seller tells me funds received, and that he will ship tomorrow, Day 2.

Day 2 - Seller indicates he dropped the knife off at Fed Ex for express delivery that morning. I ask for tracking and he says its at the office, but he will send tomorrow. At this point I was fine with assuming it would arrive Day 5, as this week included a holiday - Thanksgiving.

Day 3 - no communication between us.

Day 4 - Thanksgiving, no communication between us.

Day 5 - No package delivery. no communication between us.

Day 6 - No package delivery. no communication between us.

Day 7 - Sunday.

Day 8 - I email him saying I still haven't received package. I ask for tracking and he says he has the tracking at home, not in front of him. He says I should receive it today. Package does not arrive today.

Day 9 - I email him letting him know that no package arrived yesterday and I am out of patience. I inform him that am contacting PayPal to dispute. He responds that Fed Ex returned the package to him as undeliverable on Day 8 at 4pm, and that Fed Ex does not delivery to my address with the type of shipping he used. He said he went back to Fed Ex that Day 8 and resent with another shipping type and I should have the knife today (Day 9) before 4:30pm. I go home at lunch and the Fed Ex package it there. It shows the package was dropped off for shipment by the seller on Day 5, three days AFTER he said he dropped it off at Fed Ex for express delivery on Day 2.

So this guy lies to me on Day 1 about his intent to ship and then lies again on Day 2 about when he shipped it. The he formulates a story about why it has taken so long to arrive, that there was issue with my address and the package was returned to him. Recall that he claims to have resent the same original package that was returned to him, and that the reshipment was to have been shipped on Day 8. But funny how I get a package on Day 9 that was shipped on Day 5 not reshipped on Day 8.

I call him on that and he says he was confused with another package that was returned by Fed Ex, related to another knife he sold to someone else.

I now see why he refused to send tracking when I asked for it - He didn't have any tracking information as he hadn't shipped it!

Peter, is that bad etiquette? :barf:

PS I hope this isn't viewed as a hijack, I wanted to post it relative to Peter's comment on etiquette. I have not outed the seller yet as another buyer on the forum is still dealing with him and the same issue, I didn't want to muddy up the waters until that is resolved.

IMO no that is not bad etiquette , that is lying
If you are delayed in shipping, best to just them know the problem. Don't dig a deeper hole by lying about it. Just as in this thread communication is key. Most will help you work with a problem, but they want to know what's going on.

Nope. If he took the man's money, he owes him a prompt response. The Op was absolutely in the right to post his concerns here.

Completely agree.

Nothing sucks more during a sale or trade where communication is great, right up to the point money or goods are sent and then one party drops off the radar and all communication stops.

Even when it still works out and people get their goods, the stress and worry caused by this type of behavior is completely inconsiderate and unnecessary.

I get life happens and considering the sellers history and feedback my sense is all will work out, but how long does it really take to send a one sentence update.

So far still no word from the seller. This is the 4th day after payment.

Regarding a comment that I paid on Sunday, so I complained "two days later" - that is simply not true to my facts. I paid at 3:00 pm on Sunday, the seller's last PM to me was at 2:25 pm on Sunday. Was there a chance that the seller had to drop off the radar 35 minutes after his last communication? Unlikely. I waited 81 hours after payment to post here. I don't think I need to give anybody a week to confirm receipt of payment. That is just ridiculous. I am more than happy to give everybody who deals with me up to one week to ship the knife.

I sincerely hope he has some intervening circumstances that made it necessary for him to cut off communication.

Communication is KEY...
I will agree with many points:

1- Something may have happened..Although most everyone has a chance to check emails on their devices nowadays
2- He does have a great reputation in here..
3- Moderators are a good alternative to reach out to help.. Not so sure if I would have come in here venting just so soon if I had not exhausted
all other potential avenues of communication with him?? Merely an opinion.

I truly would venture a guess something may have happened..?
Just not like a person with a stellar REP to go black for no good reason.
Reach out to a Moderator too help..That is what they are here for.

My gutt says...You will get your knife...Communication will come back on line with a reason why no communication.
We are all guilty of pulling the trigger. Myself included...But what I do know..REP in here is earned..Most folks take
that very seriously...
Take a breath....
I do hope things work out in the end..

Happy Holidays To All

In this day of technology with smart phones on the hip of most walking/talking people if I make/receive a payment via paypal as was the OP it takes less than 60 seconds for my phone to sound with a message regarding said payment sent/received and can have it transferred directly to my bank in less than 90 seconds. I'd be concerned as well. If he is in the Gatlinburg area hopefully him and his family are safe though. I'd cut him some slack if that becomes the case and he has had to deal with evacuation and what not. In that event my family would come first and ask for forgiveness about non communication later.

Again......you did the right thing posting here Z. If we are talking etiquette......there is no reason good enough to disappear for almost 5 days after receiving more than $400 from someone. None!
Every single seller notified me immediately after getting notice of payment. Every one!
I wouldn't start a PP claim till a week goes by.
It's been said above......it takes 5 seconds to send a one sentence e mail or PM.

Yup. Not too much effort involved in firing off a quick response.

Im not sure but he may have missed the part where the op said he had made multiple attempts to contact seller. I would be wondering myself. Ifethelred lives where i do we just had a rough three days with the wildfires here in gatlinburg pigeon forge area. Good luck op i hope it all works out

That could very well be the case. OP if you know the guys real name, try googling it to see if something serious may have happened to him. I googled his username and found a person from Gatlinburg whose first name is Ethelred, could be coincidence, but ya never know.

In a situation as this, where significant time hasn't elapsed, I typically PM a moderator to obtain an alternate contact on file. If that contact doesn't yield any response, I alert mods about a possible situation and discuss further action before jumping the gun.

I've learnt life always takes priority over a hobby and it is unfair to pronounce a judgement (to both parties involved in the transaction) without having full facts.

I think everyone would happily give seller a pass if he's been dealing with wildfires. We'll just have to wait to see what the story is.

Also a very good point.

^ +1

I couldn't agree more! When I first joined here, and I was learning how this forum worked, I got a little anxious on a few of the higher dollar transactions I engaged in.

Now (as a buyer), as long as I know I've used the PayPal Goods option, I've got all the patience in the World & I don't sweat situation's like this; because I know I'm covered! :untroubled:

I PM'd two separate mods about that story I laid out a few posts above, asking for advice, and no one ever got back with me.

Update: I heard from Ethelred via email. I should be expecting the package soon. Things are looking good.

I think I said I was not passing judgment in the original post. Maybe it came across that way, but I believe I just stated my side of the facts.
