Ethnic/Historic Blades

You guys are making my day! I'm doing searches on all this stuff. Thank God for this forum! No one with a good source for a sgian dubh yet though. Sigh.

Andy

Thank you, Steve. That's what I thought this of mine was.

psst...don't forget the two on the side of the 3rd pic. nice ones, imho.

Andy,
I can heartily recommend Michael McRae at http://www.scotiametalwork.com/ Excellent bladesmith and nice guy.

But they are customs and not cheap. There are tons on Ebay, but most are cheap. So I don't know of any in the middle.

Jake, Cool!

Don't know specifically. Probably from the northern (Christian) part of the islands. Luzon again, maybe.

The Philippines are huge, and have many different ethnic and religious groups.

From http://www.tourism.gov.ph/discover/facts.asp
The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands covering a land area of 115,739 sq. m. (299,764 sq. km.). Main island groups are Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Capital is Manila. Time Zone is GMT + 8 hours.

CLIMATE
March to May is hot and dry. June to October is rainy, November to February is cool. Average temperatures: 78°F / 25°C to 90°F / 32°C; humidity is 77%.

POPULATION
There are a total of 76.5 million Filipinos as of the latest national census in May, 2000. Population growth is estimated at 2.36 percent annually. Luzon, the largest island group, accounts for more than half of the entire population.

LANGUAGES
Two official languages --- Filipino and English. Filipino which is based on Tagalog, is the national language. English is also widely used and is the medium of instruction in higher education.

Eight (8) major dialects spoken by majority of the Filipinos: Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicol, Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinense.

Filipino is that native language which is used nationally as the language of communication among ethnic groups. Like any living language, Filipino is in a process of development through loans from Philippine languages and non-native languages for various situations, among speakers of different social backgrounds, and for topics for conversation and scholarly discourse. There are about 76 to 78 major language groups, with more than 500 dialects.

RELIGIONS
Some 80% of Filipinos are Catholic. About 15% are Moslem. The rest are made up of smaller Christian denominations and Buddhist.

Cold Steel used to make a skean dhu that should be mid-range between junk and custom.

Neat CS barong, Dave. I just got the CS catalog after you mentioned that Grosse Messer. Now I know why they send out that catalog and video for free...

Ad Astra

Don't forget the bonny Scottish dirk.

A forerunner of the bowie, and adaptable to bowie techniques. I'll have to get a picture of my kids' and my dirks one day. A formidable tool.

Dave, I actually like what I see with the hardened zones on that barong of yours ~ hard edge, tip, and spine. Some Japanese blades are done similarily, with a thin hardened strip on the spine. They are less likely to bend and take a set when done this way, as opposed to just a hardened edge. Very slick, and I am amazed that it was done this way. BTW, I believe that this model is made in China IIRC

Thanks to you and Ferg for sharing,
stevo

Andy

Andy,
E-mail me your address, and I'll send you the third one down in this pic.

Sell one of my silly recycled files? Shucks, then I'd lose my amateur status. Take a look at it when you get it, and if you insist on paying for it, send whatever you think is fair to Steve Ferguson to put into Ram's education fund.

 Class act Sarge ! *salute*

Yep, Astro, Sarge is one class act. :p I can't believe the offer. :D I'll mail some $ to Steve ASAP. That very pic is what put the Sgian Dubh fire under me. I've been shopping online for a good one ever since. But just like when I discovered Khukuris there are so many bullshate artists out there with crappy knives I was hesitant to buy. This takes out the guesswork. It will get carried every day! My wife will never believe this story. I've never tried to tell her someone "gave" me a knife! She's gonna call me out right away on that one.

Thank you Sarge, you are a hell of an American!

Whoa, steady there hoss, afore you go getting carried away, you need to know what kind of outfit you're tangled up with in this here HI forum. When me and my boys were gearing up to go to Afghanistan I was quite literally deluged with donated khukuris and knives of all shapes and sizes to give to the troops. I've said thanks again, and again, but somehow simple words fall short of what a lot of folks owe a lot of good guys from the forum. Wouldn't consider myself fit to be here if I didn't at least try to live up to their example.

Sarge

p.s.: I'll send a note you can show your wife, wouldn't want to get you in trouble

If you are interested in obtaining reasonably priced and historically accurate seaxes, please look at the items on the following two pages:
http://www.jelldragon.com/vik_weapons.htm
http://www.jelldragon.com/knives.htm

Note: the seaxes with rounded points and blunt edges are weapons intended for battle re-enactment. Most such items may also be obtained sharpened at the option of the purchaser.

For examples of Scots Dirks and Sgain Dubhs, please see:
http://www.swordsmiths.co.uk/Data/Pages/Scottish Collection2.htm

Note: These are expensive, top of the line production items. Lesser versions may be had for VERY much less. Of course, custom made ones can also be had for VERY much more.

I guess that this post gets the thread moved to the HI Cantina. :D

You're right Sarge, this forum is full of great people, and though I didn't know him/wasn't here when he was, I'm sure Uncle Bill had much to do with the atmosphere here. I hope I can live up to the standard around here. I will certainly try! I e-mailed Steve and arranged to send him something. Thanks again, that was totaly unexpected and made my week!

Aproy?

If you are sending $ to the Ram fund, I can make an ugly dangler sheath for the knife Sarge made.

Email your addy, with the dimensions of the blade.

Kis, Yep, sent a check to Steve for Ram fund. I'll e-mail you the dimensions when I get the knife. Thanks Guys!!

Andy

Wow! Great collection Steve. My already high opinion of your knowledge and taste has risen to new heights! (-:

And class move there Sarge! A true "Uncle Bill" move. And just saw your generous offer as well Kismet. I know he and Rusty are smiling.
