Ever broke a Custom Knife???

However. The warranty is worthless to me if I am stuck holding two pieces of steel in my hands when I really need a tough knife. Can't mail a knife in for replacement in a "real" survival situation.

meybe use an axe :D

LOL.
I ran over one of Blinkers tantos with my backhoe.
I put it in the press, straightened it, and made a new set of handles for it.
The blade didn't move a bit. It was the handle area that was drilled full of holes.

Makers. Quit with the swiss cheez crap under the handles.
If the customer can't carry an extra 4 ozs., he aint man enough for a knife.:D

i agree, the NEWEST run of BECKER BK2s have cut outs under the handles...... while i dont think they will break, i like my old solid BK2

I think that is done for balance, not weight. I've never had a drilled handle fail. I don't worry 'bout it. These knives can take an amazing amount of work.

I use my knives hard. This includes my G.L. Drew's, Koster, Koyote, and my HI's. To date none has ever failed. I much prefer forged blades over others, but that is mainly a matter of personal preference for the quality edge they take and hold.

I prefer customs due to the fact that I get what I want from the maker rather thsan having to find something close to what I'm looking for.

Never seen one break. I have seen a few chip, however nothing catastrophic. I have knocked the handles loose on one of mine(Koyote), but that was fixed right up ;)

here's my new Lamey bowie i had Matt make up for me. I've only had it a couple of weeks but it has been a great knife so far and i expect it to be one of my all time favorites. You just can't beat damascus for looks.

It has a full hidden tang that Matt is a master at making which provides the strength of a full tang while providing a nicer looking handle without the cold spots;)

my $0.02.

it doesn't matter if it's a $30 Buck or a $600 custom, any knife will break if it's abused too much.

the difference is in the user. if i have a "non-standard" (ab)use for a knife, i'm much more likely to use a cheap blade to do the chore than a nice custom blade.

if i'm in a survival situation, i have no qualms at all about busting a knife if doing so will save my life.

I appreciate all the comments and I agree with all that was said.

I use all the knives I have, hard-custom and factory.(no safe queens for me)

Still want to know if anyone has had a custom knife fail outside of the one listed before.

ive beat the snot out of my fiddleback bush Jr and shes still true...i love that lil devil...

btw nice Lameys...i wanted one before the ol lady cursed me from knives :)

I have never broken a custom knife, but I did sever the pivot pin of a production slip joint once batoning in the backyard. Totally my fault.

nice thread!!! Only knife I ever broke was a store folder and a test knife of mine :)

I have a guy at work coming to me for a custom design after his 6 month search for the right blade shape and handle design shape combo.......not found :)

He isnt worried about it breaking at all I am sure :) And I aint either.

Exactly which is why I got a BK2 and had it modded to my tastes, beadblasted, custom black canvas micarta handles, thumb grooves. It's out getting a custom leather sheath now.

BUT...... After I got the BK2 this beauty came up for sale The Sharpened Prybar:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=712147

I am going to beat the crap out of it but I doubt I will ever be able to break it. It's even thicker than a BK2!

i personally would never use a custom knife to the extremes that i use my BK2..Why? Price difference...If i EVER EVER break my BK2, it would be from abuse that I alone could not deliver to the knife without help of a big sledge hammer . My body weight cant break it when i am prying a stubborn piece of fatwood from a stump, i havent broken the tip off ( good luck)..Tough as tough gets, for well under 100 bucks.

How much would a custom cost, built to BK2 specs ( length, stock thinckness, blade width) out of the same or better steel...? I dont know..a wild guess would be 200 to 400 bucks...

AND thats why you dont see alot of broken custom knives. I would beat the living piss out of a custom if i had one. But i dont. lol.

I read that a lot on BF. I personally feel that a warranty is a nice thing to have, and it helps to sell knives.

However. The warranty is worthless to me if I am stuck holding two pieces of steel in my hands when I really need a tough knife. Can't mail a knife in for replacement in a "real" survival situation.

Ah yes, but if a company is willing to offer a warrenty such as ESEE do (you don't even need proof of purchase), then it would imply they are sure enough of their products that the user shouldn't have to worry about breaking one.

I have beat the tar out of my RAT/ESEE knives and they are still going strong. Plus I have seen them openly fulfill their warranty even under suspicious circumstances without fail. I for one can personaly stnd for the company and the men behind it. Truly ethical quality folks producing an exemplary product. Their guarantee isn't just written to sell knives.

I have chipped the edges of a few of my knives - but that is fairly normal when you hit METAL where you don't think it is. Any edge will roll or chip when trying to cut something it was not designed to cut.

The custom knives that appeal to me the most are the ones that look like they could not be made by a machine.
And there's a satisfaction from dealing with another human being and having a knife made to your specifications.
I would not expect functional superiority in the average custom-made knife. Sure there are some makers who are true masters of the craft and have perfected their heat treat.
A factory is an efficient way to make a knife, car, computer and most other things. Nothing wrong with that.
