I did that with a benchmade skirmish. then they discontinued like 2 weeks later. so it sits in my toolbox brand new in the box. just too pretty to ruin.

No. There is a benchmade gold series knife on Blade hq I would buy and use everyday if I had $800 to spend.

Yes this has happened to me. I cant speak for anyone else but I have discovered that in my case it was a matter of not having found the right knife. If I buy a knife because I love the looks it usually ends up being that. Just a looker. Then I purchased a knife solely on my needs as a user. And it ended up being so perfect that despite that feeling of "man this is nice" I literally couldnt resist carrying it and using it. This has happened two times in a row. Now I really try to be more picky with my purchases instead of the impulse buys. Because the ownership of those two knives (carson lab boiling & ZT0900) have been incredibly rewarding when compared to the majority of the knives I have owned. But yeah, I have had knives too pretty to use. But I find it hard to put any knife purchase to use because of my kooky thinking. I finally understand that bond you develop with a knife. I love them both so much that I refuse to say that I will never get rid of them. Whenever I say that they are gone by the next week. Cant let that happen with these, lol.

Impossible. That's like saying food is too delicious or a woman too beautiful.

If I get one and decide it's too nice to use I get rid of it.

I have done that a few times. I've bought a few knives to carry when wearing a suit and never managed to carry them so eventually sold them.

I bought a Spyderco Sprint to carry and never could bring myself to carry it because of how much the value had gone up so I eventually sold it. (But I kept a different sprint that I DO carry.)

I do try to buy knives to use. There are other problems though- sometimes I get a knife and it doesn't work out, or I end up with too many knives and I can't carry them all.

Some years ago Cold Steel decided to discontinue its Rajah I. Like the polished Espada knives, I never could have afforded the knife had it not been discontinued. I paid about a hundred bucks for it, about the same as the plastic ones, and that was including shipping. But though I got three or four of them, I couldn't bring myself to carry one. Too nice, I thought. But recently, when I picked up four Espada XL Polished AUS8A knives for $160 each, including shipping, I decided to hell with it, so I decided to take the one step that would seal my commitment! That's right, I took those clear plastic protective stickers and threw them away. There was no turning back!

There was no way I ever could have afforded those knives (Rajah or Espada) before they were discontinued. I certainly can't afford the new CTS-XHP versions that are well over twice the price I paid for the AUS8A version. But I don't carry most of the knives I own because I tend to just collect them. Take for example my CRKT M21-04. Beautiful spear point, nice (but somewhat pointless) Auto-LAWKS. It's too heavy and I just don't trust linerlocks much. Still, if it was lighter I might carry it now and again. But I don't have many knives that are too beautiful to carry. I have a SOG Agency and Super Bowie that I wouldn't carry and use. If I were to go hiking or camping, I'd be more inclined to use my Ka-Bar Large Heavy Bowie or Ontario Marine Raider.

I've actually had the opposite happen and quite frequently. I've bought plenty of nice knives with the intention of just collecting, but ended up busting them out and using them. I feel like if something was super nice, I should be the one to enjoy it not some other person who might not understand and appreciate them as much as I do.

That was the Spyderco Vallotton for me. Beautiful knife and incredibly functional but a combination of the overall thickness in the pocket and the sheer beauty of the model meant it almost never made it out of the house. But I'd play with it constantly at home. Like the guys above, I ended up selling. Still want to buy another sometime. I was eyeing the D/A Auto on bladehq...

I typically use whatever I throw in my pocket for the day, but when I finally bought my first Brous, a VR-71, I couldn't bring myself to use it at all. I ended up trading it for a more user friendly knife.

I used to think this way when I got my Sebenza but then I thought why would I spend 485 on a knife I don't use. So now it's a part of my edc rotation.

This happens to me because I have too many knives. If I only had one, I would use it no doubt.

No. I have one collectible knife I bought at a charity event. I plan to sell it or use it but I hate display case knives or safe queens on anything. Everything you have will one day belong to someone else who probably will just sell it or use it anyway. Use it! Even if it's expensive. Scratches are memories and increase the value of something to me. Anyone want to buy a Beretta Peerless with gold inlays #150? :-D

What is wrong with making a clear distinction between users and shelf sitters?

Often, when the knife cannot be replaced, it makes sense not to use it. If you need it for emergencies or special occasions, then you don't use it everyday either... If it has a real special edge on it that took a lot of effort, and would be hard to restore, then waiting for the right time to use it makes sense.

There is a discontinued $170 TOPS Hellion that I won't use, but a $600 Randall I will, because the Randall is actually easier to find if you are willing to pay a dealer who waited for you... It's also much easier to sharpen than the TOPS, so definitely the TOPS is the safe queen of the two in my book...
