ever buy a knife to use and then decided it was just to nice.

I can honestly appreciate that. Personally, much as I like knives I would auction that sucker in a second.

This all depends on the context imo. The first question to be answered is If I bought that knife at a garage sale for $20 and found out it was worth $50,000 would I keep it? For me, the answer is no...I would sell it and invest the money elsewhere. If the answer were yes though, then I like to believe that I would be willing to use it. Otherwise why am I keeping it?

I like to use my knives, so if I don't think I'll use them, I won't buy them.
But yes...sometimes I do buy one and decide that (or just that I don't think I'll ever use them). I'll set on them for a few weeks/months then sell them.

I've bought a couple I've had no intentions on using, my 2nd and 3rd ELMAX Blurs for example, I use one, the other two are for collecting, or th e 145th anniversary Boker I just bought, I'll never use it, but I can't say I've ever bought a knife that I intended on using and then decided not to.
99% of my Knives thus far are users. And by rotating use, I save the life on all of them.

I broke my "will use it" resolution when I got the ivory handled Northwoods Madison Barlow and a second jigged bone version which was intentionally purchased to use.

I can say without hesitation that I've wound up in this exact situation more than once. Despite my commitment to using every knife I buy, sometimes I just can't bring myself to do it.

The upside is that if I ever have children, I'll have a ton of nice things to give them when they're old enough to not only appreciate them, but be responsible with them.
